Job Overview
This position reports directly to the Director of Engineering. The Broadcast Engineer is responsible for regular installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of television equipment related to both over the air and studio production. This includes Broadcast Origination, Transmission, and Quality Control for all over the air Public Media Group of Southern California services. Must work in close coordination with Broadcast Operations department to support their needs as required to configure, troubleshoot, or repair Master Control related equipment and interface with PMM or other third-party providers as needed.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assist with installing and maintaining broadcast equipment.
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings to effectively install coax, wiring, and cabling in addition to physical equipment and utilize such drawings to troubleshoot problems during and after installation.
- Ability to use hand and power tools to perform installation tasks.
- Understand the flow of video, audio, and RF signals through complex production and broadcast systems to assist operations and production staff with use and troubleshooting as needed.
- Perform regular checks and maintenance of production and broadcast systems as needed.
- Diagnose problems using standard practices and test equipment including, but not limited to audio monitors, waveform and vector scope, oscilloscope, and spectrum analyzer.
- Interface with PMM and other third-party providers.
- Interface with Broadcast Operations to address engineering related on air discrepancies.
- Travel to main transmitter site(s) at Mount Wilson for routine maintenance or emergencies where remote systems fail and physical interaction with equipment is required.
- Travel to all secondary transmission sites for routine maintenance and repairs as needed.
- Assist with productions as needed.
- Work as a member of a team.
- Communicate and collaborate with other departments as needed
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of modern Broadcast Standards
- Knowledge of various production and broadcast file formats
- Some supervisory experience preferred
- Operating knowledge of Production Studio Equipment
- Must be able to react effectively to emergency situations
- Must be able to use good judgment and decision making
- Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, set priorities, and work under frequent and fast-paced deadlines with excellent initiative and follow through with the ability to multi task.
- Effectively prioritize duties with minimal supervision
- Must be competent with computer and networking skills to interface with, and configure modern production and broadcast equipment.
- Must be able to effectively communicate and work with IT Department staff to install, configure, and troubleshoot IP Networks related to production and broadcast systems
- Willingness to be trained in the operation and basic maintenance of both high and low power DTV Transmitter facilities.
- After training, must be competent enough to work in these DTV Transmitter facilities unsupervised to provide regular maintenance checks and basic operation of related equipment.
- Stay informed with the latest practices and innovation in the TV Broadcast industry.
- Learn or currently understand ATSC 3.0
- Safely lift equipment weighing up to 50lbs. and climb ladders when needed.
- Safely operate a motor vehicle in less than optimal conditions on both paved and unpaved roads to access remote sites and use good judgement to stay safe.
- Basic survival skills for working alone in remote locations.
Education and Work Experience:
- Graduation from college or technical school with coursework in film or television production or a discipline in a specialized technical, trade. (Equivalent experience in the broadcast television industry can be substituted.)
- 5 years or more experience at a television broadcast and production facility
