Pragmatic is a film and television literary consultancy advising studios, producers and artists in the identification, curation, acquisition and development of books and other literary material for adaptation across a variety of platforms. Our clients include Academy, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-nominated producers and filmmakers of commercially successful and culturally significant films and series. The company works within and beyond the traditional book scouting process and acts as an extension of clients' development and production teams in a proactive, curated and producorial way; we also have a handful of in-house projects in various stages of development. We are a small but rapidly growing company and we are looking for an Assistant, Literary Development in New York.
Duties of the role include:
-General administrative support including domestic and international travel, scheduling/calendar/phones/phone sheet and formatting and editing semi-weekly memos to clients
-Research authors/books/rights and read/report on manuscripts, scripts, articles and other material
-Maintain a thorough Filemaker database of books/scripts/articles and other literary material
-Prepare a daily tracking report of trade (publishing and film/TV) news, publishing deals, new articles/podcasts and publishing calendars and update internal market and project tracking grids
-Coordinate information and material in preparation for calls and meetings
-Contribute to company's own film/TV projects, including helping to prepare pitch documents, writer/director/talent lists and reading scripts and preparing notes
-Respond promptly, helpfully and professionally to client and partner requests
-Manage special projects as needed
-Recruit and mentor two-to-three interns per semester
Proficiency in G Suite (mail, docs, sheets) is necessary and familiarity with Filemaker is helpful. Interest in and familiarity with book publishing and story development are required, as are: an aptitude for client service; attention to detail, organization, communication skills, intellectual curiosity, the ability to juggle multiple priorities, and a willingness to think ahead and anticipate next steps and take initiative. Ideal candidates will have agency/management experience. Hours are 10:30am-7pm onsite in our Meatpacking District office and salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
