DESCRIPTION:
Billboard: Staff Writer
Responsibilities:
• Write timely and engaging articles, including breaking news stories, features, and interviews across a variety of music genres and industry topics.
• Break exclusive stories and offer fresh perspectives on the evolving landscape of music, from business developments and cultural trends to key releases and artist profiles.
• Develop and maintain an extensive network of sources, including artists, executives, industry insiders, and publicists.
• Stay deeply informed on the latest happenings in music, ensuring Billboard’s coverage is both comprehensive and authoritative.
• Collaborate with the editorial team to pitch, shape, and execute high-impact stories, aligning with Billboard’s audience and brand priorities.
• Work closely with Billboard’s social and video teams to ensure stories are promoted effectively and thrive across platforms.
• Participate in artist interviews (in-person, virtual, or at events), red-carpet coverage, and industry events as needed.
• Monitor Billboard’s proprietary charts and data, integrating relevant insights into coverage when applicable.
• Meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment without compromising accuracy or creativity in your work.
Requirements:
• 3-5 years of experience in professional writing or journalism, preferably with a focus on music, entertainment, or pop culture.
• A clear, engaging, and authoritative writing voice that can adapt to different formats and tones (news, features, analysis, etc.).
• Excellent reporting skills, with a proven ability to consistently deliver high-quality, well-researched content on tight deadlines.
• Deep knowledge of music history, culture, and industry trends, as well as familiarity with key players and current issues within the field.
• High-level organizational skills and the ability to juggle multiple assignments at once.
• A demonstrated passion for covering a wide range of musical genres and the business of music.
• A familiarity with Billboard’s charts and their cultural and industry impact is a major plus.
• Proficiency in leveraging social media to amplify stories and engage readers is highly desired.
• A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, media studies, or a related field is preferred.
• Availability to attend and cover live events, award shows, or festivals, which may require evening and weekend work.
