STUDIO TOOLS & RESEARCH DEPARTMENT
RESEARCH SCIENTIST INTERNSHIP:
Pixar has a Research Scientist opening in its world-class research group. The role requires one that has a PhD in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Data Science or equivalent, and a deep interest in development of advanced computer graphics techniques. In this role, you'll collaborate with artists, developers and other researchers to create innovative solutions that expand Pixar's creative reach and technical capabilities while maintaining connections to the external research community.
CORE SOFTWARE ENGINEER INTERNSHIP:
Pixar's Studio Tools Department is hiring a Core Software Development Intern to work with the team that develops high-quality, high-performance software serving as the backbone of our movie making process. The tasks will span from open source projects like USD (Universal Scene Description) and OpenSubdiv to a state-of-the-art evaluation engine that powers Presto, our in-house animation software. Those interested have to have a good level of knowledge and experience in C engineering as well as UNIX/Linux systems, 3D graphics interaction techniques and 3D applications (Maya, Houdini, Katana, etc.). We take pride in our attention to detail and quality of code and hope you do too. Experience with modern GPU and HPC technologies is a plus.
SYSTEMS DEPARTMENT
MEDIA SYSTEMS INTERNSHIP:
Pixar's Media Systems team, known as The AVengers, are responsible for all the audio/video infrastructure in the studio, including the theaters, screening rooms, recording studios, edit suites, conference rooms, telecom and live event support. The internship is geared towards students interested in a career supporting media systems and offers hand-on experience and exposure to our unique environment. You'll be troubleshooting and maintaining A/V systems, installing consumer A/V equipment and learning a lot about cabling systems. This role requires that you are highly motivated, mature, and eager to help solve issues for the studio and users regarding all A/V matters.
PRODUCTION SUPPORT ENGINEER INTERNSHIP:
Pixar's Production Support Engineer team (PSE) connects with almost every group at the studio working to diagnose and problem-solve issues for users on GNU/Linux-based desktop platforms. This requires us to be responsive and collaborative, to maintain clear, open communication and prioritize a complex workflow, all under constantly changing conditions. Some of the things we work with every day: Fedora/RHEL/CentOS, rpm/yum, Xorg, Gnome, desktop hardware, Git, Python, shell scripts, device drivers, nfs, ssh. We are looking for interns who are passionate about delivering excellent support and providing technical solutions to our users who create great movies.
SYSTEMS INFRASTRUCTURE RESOURCES INTERNSHIP:
Pixar's Systems Infrastructure Resources Team contributes to the daily operation of the physical infrastructure contained in our on-site data centers and tech rooms. In this role, you will help keep the data centers operational and hardware functional. The internship is best for someone who is sensitive to and aware of how integral hardware systems run (is power being impacted, is the environment cool enough while many machines are in operation, etc.), and is capable of installing server components and setting up cable systems accurately.
SYSTEMS WINDOW TEAM INTERNSHIP:
Pixar's Systems Windows Team solves a variety of Windows-related issues each day in support of desktop users. This internship is best for someone with some familiarity with systems programming in a class environment and who has some experience on the command line, building Windows hardware and operating systems and who enjoys helping others with technical issues and questions. Do your friends come to you asking for help fixing a problem on your Windows-based system or ask for advice on the latest gaming set-up? If so, you may be someone interested in pursuing a career in systems administration.
SYSTEMS SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP:
The Systems Software Development team, affectionately known as Port 80, is responsible for creating and maintaining a variety of internal and external web applications, many of which are used on a daily basis to keep both the Systems department and the studio running. This is an opportunity where you'll work on a couple of small to medium-sized projects with the hope that you'll be able to deploy something internally that folks will use while you're still here. You'll be part of the development, testing and deployment cycle for the code you write which needs to be robust and well-written so that it lives on after you've completed your internship! Requires someone who can quickly become familiar with our development environment. Examples of what we use are Python, JavaScript, apache/nginx, ansible, bash, Linux/macOS, Git, py.test, Flask, AngularJS, React and OpenShift.
SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT - POST PRODUCTION ENGINEERING INTERNSHIP:
The software built by Pixar's Post Production Engineering Team is the last to touch every Pixar project (films, shorts, promotional material) and every version of it (Digital Cinema, Blu-ray/UHD, 3D, International) before it leaves the studio. This internship is geared towards students with some computer science experience (Web Development and/or Python experience preferred), who are excited to contribute to the movie making process. You'll be part of the full product lifecycle, seeing a new tool or feature though design, development, testing, deployment, and support. We're looking for someone who is a great communicator, is highly motivated, and is flexible.
BIG DATA ANALYSIS INTERNSHIP:
Pixar's Data Analytics and Optimization team is hiring an intern to help discover the information hidden in vast amounts of production-based data. We have large quantities of structured and unstructured data, thousands of render servers that access the data in various ways, and large quantities of metadata describing these access patterns. Your mission, should you accept it, is to uncover compute and IO patterns across our rendering pipelines leading to more sophisticated automation and anomaly detection and, ultimately, better movies! Requires applied statistics skills, such as distributions, statistical testing, regression, etc. You'll also need scripting and programming skills in one or more modern programming languages such as Python or GO, experience with streaming analytics and streaming environments (Kafka, Kinesis, etc), data indexing and searching tools (ElasticSearch, Splunk, etc.), KV stores and distributed caches (Redis, MongoDB and memcached) and familiarity with modern Linux kernals, performance tools and tracing facilities.
