The Media Relations Manager will use strong experience in media relations, and generating media coverage across outlets, to raise awareness of PFLAG and its programs by collaborating with the Director of Communications to create a domestic media relations strategy, then implementing it. Looking to hired in Washington, DC but will consider NYC candidates as well.
Duties and Responsibilities:
-In collaboration with the Director of Communications, develop and execute strategic communications and media engagement plans to generate high impact press coverage across print, digital, and broadcast to amplify PFLAG's work, shape public discourse, and drive action;
-Ensure consistent messaging and branding is used across all of PFLAG's media materials and related communications collateral;
-Meet with journalists, editors, producers, and editorial boards to deepen relationships and generate new opportunities for media coverage;
-Serve as a responsive point of contact for media requests, and maintaining an up-to-date media list for all press contacts;
-Support PFLAG Chapter Network with media needs, helping place local, state, and regional pieces to elevate their work;
-Produce engaging and inspiring materials including press releases, op-eds, quotes from PFLAG leadership and members, and more, all to share quickly, often via rapid response;
-Collaborate with internal teams to create media moments and highlight PFLAG's work across all departments;
-Monitor press for PFLAG mentions and issues, staying engaged on our issues and broadly beyond for media opportunities to share our messages via key stakeholders;
-Work across departments to build the PFLAG National story bank with key storytellers from across the country and PFLAG's nationwide network of diverse members and supporters;
-Represent PFLAG National at coalition meetings, helping to coordinate strategy on key issues and keeping PFLAG's voice in the mix of coverage;
-Track media coverage and create reports for internal teams and external stakeholders, including major donors; and
-Performs other relevant responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Communications
Minimum Qualifications:
-Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience in media and communications
-3+ years working as a media relations professional;
-A consistent track record of placing a variety of high-impact media coverage;
-Strong relationships with a large and responsive network of journalists, editors, and producers at leading media outlets across print, digital, radio and television;
-Experience leveraging social media to develop media relationships and drive media coverage;
-Expertise reviewing, editing and strengthening op-eds, speeches, video scripts, and other written materials;
-Experience with media relations tools and services;
-Experience with general office equipment, including network and desktop copiers, scanners, projectors, telephone systems, and video calls/meetings;
-Experience with Adobe Creative Suite; and
-Comfort level working with remote employees, including off-site supervisor
Desirable Skills:
-Superior writing ability, including press releases, quotes, op-eds, talking points, media statements, email pitches, briefing documents, and other press-related materials;
-Media relationship building and management, and a record of successfully pitching stories;
-Using tools like Cision and open source research to identify new opportunities;
-Ability to craft compelling pitches and stories distilling from complex policy-driven reports, investigations and other materials;
-Ability to work independently and still be a collaborative team player, comfortable with a fast-paced work environment;
-Journalism experience desirable but not required;
-Excellent attention to detail and well organized, with strong proofreading skills;
-Passionate about LGBTQ+ issues and civil rights as a whole, or a desire to learn about them; and
-Some fluency in Spanish a plus
