Meteorologist (Off-Air)
CBS News is seeking an off-camera meteorologist who will contribute to multiple shows and platforms including but not limited to CBS Mornings, CBS Evening News, and CBS News 24/7. This position will work closely with on-air meteorologists to create forecasts, produce comprehensible visualizations, and assist with weather coverage planning.
The successful candidate must bring an extensive broadcast meteorology background including proven experience growing in a breaking news environment. In addition, the ideal candidate will be able to help field teams navigate weather and choose safe and visually appealing reporting locations. Experience with augmented reality and virtual production is also preferred.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• At least 5 years experience in broadcast meteorology
• Bachelor’s degree in atmospheric science or meteorology
• Proven mastery of news judgment
• Understanding of standards for journalistic integrity and production quality
• Strong ability to communicate with news managers as part of daily editorial decision-making
• Expert proficiency on broadcast weather visualization systems such as TWC Max or Baron Lynx, basic understanding of virtual production environments and Unreal Engine
• Familiarity newscast rundown systems such as ENPS
• Very detail oriented and able to work on deadline
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team
• Adept at responding to breaking news.
OTHER DUTIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:
• Analyze weather observations, models and other available and relevant data to build accurate domestic and occasionally international weather forecasts
• Experience forecasting all types of cyclonic scale weather including severe thunderstorms, winter storms, tropical storms and hurricanes, coastal influences, and fire weather
• Work calmly and collaboratively with show producers and be accustomed to working with on-air talent
