CBS Newspath is seeking a Producer-Shooter-Writer-Editor for its New York City newsroom to lead coverage on our consumer beat. Newspath generates content for the network's 200 affiliates around the country and international partners, featuring day of air news, political news, as well as health and consumer topics.
Newspath consumer content is among the most sought after by the affiliates and clients and all CBS News platforms. Newspath delivers at least one consumer package every weekday along with a variety of vosots, graphics, two-way interview opportunities and a pre-produced weekend consumer wrap. The Consumer Producer drives planning and execution to fill this ambitious slate of content coordinating Newspath, CBS stations and network resources. The majority of story topics are generated by the Consumer Producer and range from day-of-air coverage of key economic news (ie monthly jobs report, inflation report, interest rate changes) to enterprise stories on issues and trends.
This is an opportunity to make an impact and be a leader in fast-paced professional newsroom. The Consumer Producer owns the beat from covering breaking economic news to pitching and vetting original story ideas – in order to shepherd first class content through all stages of production - from researching, shooting elements, scripting, to editing the final package. You will work closely with a team of correspondents around the country, under the supervision of an experienced staff of executive producers. Responsibilities include shooting, writing smart, concise scripts and editing pieces on Avid under tight deadlines.
Qualifications:
• This position requires membership in both the Writers Guild of America and the IBEW.
• At least 5 years of experience in major market or network required.
• Ability to write and edit under tight deadlines in a busy news environment
• Proficiency in AVID
• Excellent communication and planning skills
• Aptitude for the consumer beat and understanding financial reports
Successful candidates will have:
-Proficiency writing day-of-air news packages and vosots. (Requires researching story, following story editorial developments, applying CBS News standards to script writing, and meeting deadlines for script approval and edit. Also requires updating script as story may change throughout shift.)
-Camera proficiency: shooting b-roll and characters in the field.
-Ability to source visual elements and voices for pieces in the CBS News environment. (May include booking subjects to interview and conducting those interviews. Often requires coordinating with other members of unit to stay tuned to incoming elements on breaking and developing news stories. )
-Familiarity with potential sources of video and how to wrangle it, including video and sound from CBS News and Stations, CBS affiliates, Network News Service, agency services (ie APTN, Reuters), “handout” video, user generated content, etc.
-Ability to plan graphic elements for pieces and either create or commission them.
-Ownership of all video sourcing and related restrictions for all video/elements used in all edits, spelling out all sources and video restrictions with every edit. (Producers often work directly with Rights & Clearance, CBS News Standards and Legal to vet questions and resolve issues.)
-Enthusiasm for close collaboration with correspondents, photographers, editors and other producers to generate engaging content that will make an impact with audience.
