The Manager, Transmission is part of the Network Operations Team and reports to the Senior Director, Network Operations. This role is responsible for the management of the staff as well as overseeing all day-to-day activities of Pac-12’s Broadcast and Ingest Transmission Services, or “BITS.” The Manager will act as the primary point of escalation for the BITS staff and liaise with all Pac-12 departments, including our remote Master Control, live remote crews, and outside vendors. A critical component of the position is preparing, publishing, maintaining, and ensuring the application of standard operating procedures, workflows, and training materials to support the BITS staff.
Responsibilities
• Day-to-day Operations - Supervise staff (and perform as needed) the main operational activities of the department:
• Work Orders - Gather information and take direction from multiple sources, such as Programming and Production departments; generate work orders for the activity of the department.
• Oversee Transmission Check-in Procedures – Check the technical and logistical parameters of the backhaul feeds and transmission facilities, following documented “fax-out” procedures, prior to each live event.
• Oversee Feeds - Monitor incoming feeds for the duration of the events, including re-feeds, if necessary.
• Perform Troubleshooting – Investigate and report each service interruption or anomaly to Engineering.
• Supervise (and perform as needed) the main ingest and media management activities of the department related to live events and other activities:
• Supervise the staff’s execution of recording, ingesting (including metadata entry) and QC duties for all programming assets.
• Perform supervisory and administrative duties:
• Author, publish and maintain support documentation outlining procedures and workflows.
• Schedule staff and publish continual updates for BITS and Engineering.
• Prepare and present backup scenario(s) to staff in the event of loss of service during a live event.
• Schedule and track freelance hours with respect to budget; perform quarterly audits.
• Assist in identifying, interviewing, and hiring prospective employees.
• Develop appropriate training modules for new hires.
• Develop protocol and training to incorporate the use of new technology.
• Compile shift reports and triage procedures for Management as well as other departments.
• Approve timecards.
• Write and deliver performance evaluations.
• Coach, develop, and inspire a diverse team of high achievers.
• Other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements
• Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
• Five years of prior work experience with satellite, fiber-based, and/or Internet2 transmission.
• Two years experience as a media ingest supervisor or operator.
• Proficiency with routing switchers, Media Asset Management systems, and file-based ingest.
• Experience performing QC procedures.
• Prior operation of waveform monitors, vectorscopes, and audio scopes.

• Ability to work nights, holidays and weekends as part of a normal work schedule.
