Ohio University's College of Fine Arts is accepting applications for a full-time Scenic Charge Artist and Paint Shop Supervisor specializing in scenic painting. We seek an experienced, mature and organized individual to lead the scenic painting department in both classroom and production functions. This is a ten-month staff appointment expected to last three years. If funding is secured beyond that point, the successful candidate is encouraged to apply to the permanent position.
Strong mentorship of students-including first generation students and students from underrepresented minorities-to enhance both the MFA and BFA programs is critical in our educational environment. The ideal candidate should have teaching knowledge and production experience in: colour matching, wood graining, faux finishing, marble brick and stone, painting on fabric and scrim, sign painting, portraiture and trompe-l'oeil and other specialized theatrical painting techniques.
Duties include painting and mentoring of scenic painting components of our production season; establish and enforce shop standards; train and oversee student scenic painting teams; teach in areas of specialization; daily supervision and maintenance of the paint shop, teaching scenic painting and introductory scenic design classes, as well as contributing to instructional and administrative duties in collaboration with two scenic faculty and 4-8 graduate student assistants.
This position requires daily oversight of the paint shop plus nights, and weekends, including, but not limited to, technical and dress rehearsals. Hours required as dictated by academic and production schedules.
Minimum Qualifications
MFA in theatrical design or scenic arts plus one year of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in Scenic Painting.
Teaching ability of multiple painting applications, and introduction to design.
Working knowledge of all areas in the scenic design and technology programs.
Preferred Qualifications
Membership in United Scenic Artists Local 829 preferred but not required.
Experience in university teaching.
Experience teaching and mentoring students of diverse backgrounds.
