OVERVIEW
INTRO TO POSITION
As a member of NPR Visuals Team, the Editor III will be editing and producing photography (and some video) content for NPR’s desks, shows and podcasts. The editor will primarily work on commissioning and editing photography and illustration for all NPR platforms. This editor will work on news and enterprise stories as needed.
Candidates will have strong visual storytelling skills, a keen eye for news and be skilled at finding new stories and angles.
NPR Visuals is focused on creating and distributing content that reflects and serves America. We work with teams across NPR, our member stations, and content partners to tell stories and engage audiences on NPR.org, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and other visual platforms.
This is a union represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. There will be some night, weekend and holiday work.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Commission and edit original photography and illustrations for NPR.
• Work closely with reporters, writers, editors and producers to identify visual opportunities and coverage lines.
• Plan and coordinate with NPR security team to ensure the utmost preparation, training and safety of our photojournalists in the field.
• Collaborate with photographers, illustrators, agencies and vendors to process contracts and invoices from assignments.
• Direct photographers in the field.
• Innovate, execute, assess and iterate visual projects for all platforms.
• Edit, research and license images for all NPR platforms including NPR.org, Instagram, YouTube, and emerging platforms.
• Photo edit breaking news stories or large scale news events.
• Work to build and strengthen relationships with photographers you are directing through briefings, support, regular contact and feedback
• Handle photo imaging, captions and credits for stories you edit.
• Research, pitch, write and produce stories for NPR’s visuals vertical, The Picture Show.
• Contribute to planning and creating strategic efforts to effectively reach new and existing audiences on digital platforms
• Demonstrate strong editorial and news judgment.
• Uphold the highest standards for NPR’s visual journalism and storytelling.
• Stay up to date with NPR broadcasts, podcasts, reporters, news wires, competition and internal communications to make sure our visual storytelling is optimized and smart.
• Additional duties as assigned by your manager.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
• Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university with a specialization in film, video, media production, photography or journalism preferred.
WORK LOCATION
• Hybrid Permitted: This is a hybrid permitted role. Some aspects of this role include duties that are better performed at an NPR facility. The employee will be required to be onsite at the Washington, DC office at least 10 days a year. The employee must also reside in an NPR supported location based on the number of onsite days they choose.
REQUIRED SKILLS
• Photographic and storytelling experience, preferably with a major network or newsroom, studio or creative agency.
• Experience assigning photographers and visual journalists and supporting them in the field.
• Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent time frames and changing priorities/conditions.
• Mastery of Adobe Creative Cloud programs related to video and photo design. (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere).
• Ability to write briefly and accurately.
• Be well versed in copyright and ethical journalism practices.
• Extensive experience in content management systems.
• Excellent communication and writing skills.
• Excellent organizational skills to handle multiple assignments across different teams and timelines.
• Have a strong interest in current events.
• Ability to work independently and with members of a cooperative team.

JOB TYPE
• This is a full time, non exempt position.
COMPENSATION
Annual Salary: The U.S. based anticipated annual salary for this opportunity is $112,500.13. The rate displayed reflects the annual salary NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
