OVERVIEW
We are looking for a reporter with a sharp eye for what a digital audience wants to read. The right candidate for this position is interested in daily news, has impeccable news judgment and thrives in an environment that is fast-paced and may require pivoting at a moment’s notice. This reporter will be able to write engaging daily stories, insightful explainers, and context-filled copy. Additionally, this role will pitch stories that help set NPR apart amid stiff online competition, adhere to NPR’s strict journalistic standards, as well as work collaboratively across the NPR newsroom.
This is a full-time temporary position starting in late August/early September through December 2024.
This is a union-represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Write for the web with speed, accuracy and voice while on deadline and/or under pressure
• Write conversationally and with a digital audience in mind
• Work with digital team supervisors to unearth daily story ideas, write news stories and, as warranted, contribute to live blogs.
• Be well-versed in audience metrics and social signals to help inform decision-making
• Ensure that all materials meet NPR News standards and practices, including standards of accuracy, fairness, honesty and impartiality
• Show flexibility in priorities and subject matter under tight deadlines

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Demonstrated excellence in reporting and writing for digital
• Demonstrated news judgment
• A passion for digital reporting, writing and editing
• Demonstrated ability to work at different levels of a newsroom
• Demonstrated familiarity with NPR journalism
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure
• Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions
• Ability to both work independently and collaborate with others
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating, at all times, respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Deep understanding of online culture
• Previous experience covering breaking news events for a major outlet
• Ability to file for broadcast
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience
WORK LOCATION
Remote Permitted: This is a remote permitted role. This role is based out of our Washington, DC office but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves.
JOB TYPE
This is a temporary (4-month) full time position.
COMPENSATION
Hourly Rate: The U.S. based anticipated hourly rate for this opportunity is $50.48 per hour. The rate displayed reflects the maximum hourly rate NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
