Ted Radio Hour Associate Producer
In each episode of TED Radio Hour, host Manoush Zomorodi takes listeners on a narrative journey, exploring how great thinkers can uniquely help us answer the biggest questions of our time.
The ideal candidate will share our enthusiasm for science communication, as well as our spirit of inquiry that TED Radio Hour listeners have come to love. They will seek the stories that help audiences learn more about the world, our communities and ourselves, and answer the ultimate question: “What makes us human?”
TED Radio Hour is a highly-produced weekly narrative podcast. Each episode inspires and compels listeners to think about the world differently through a multitude of stories, voices, and perspectives. The Associate Producer position can be a remote position, but candidates will be expected to travel occasionally to Washington D.C. This role will report to the Senior Supervising Producer and Executive Producer of TED Radio Hour.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Researches TED presenters and their topics; prepares deeply researched interview prep and analysis for TRH host. Conducts follow-up interviews when necessary
• Edits individual podcast segments (at least 18 per year) of the podcast, pulling from TED talks and additional 1 - 2 hour interviews to create artfully constructed 12 - 18 minute segments
• Scores, levels and masters individual episodes
• Participates in group edit sessions, offering actionable editorial feedback to host and producers
• Generates, pitches and researches interview ideas for the program
• Provides technical support to host, guests and other producers as needed
• Assists with the production of digital media content
• Other duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS AND BACKGROUND:
• At least three years of audio editing and production experience, preferably some of it in long-form narrative; ability to edit audio confidently on deadline with minimal supervision
• At least three years of experience in writing for audio: broadcast and/or podcast
• Experience researching and articulating complicated ideas; familiarity with academic journals and computer-access data banks
• Ability to effectively collaborate with others, demonstrating, at all times, respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and beyond
• Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, under stringent timeframes and changing conditions; ability to prioritize, anticipate changing demands, and communicate effectively
• Demonstrated commitment to fact checking and an understanding of journalistic ethics
• Strong working knowledge of digital media, including proficiency in social media as a way to distribute content
• Highly supportive of cultivating and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
WORK LOCATION:
This is a hybrid permitted role. The employee will be required to be onsite at one of our offices (Washington D.C., New York City, or Culver City, CA) at least 10 days a year. The employee must also reside in an NPR supported location based on the number of onsite days they choose.
This position is covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. The minimum annualized salary for this position is $85,000.
