NPR is looking for an experienced editor and leader to help guide the direction and growth of several shows, including Invisibilia, Embedded and Rough Translation. The Supervising Senior Editor is a key editorial and leadership position in NPR’s Enterprise Storytelling Unit (ESU), helping to guide NPR’s work telling thoughtful, affecting and deeply reported stories in podcasting. The ideal candidate cares about telling original stories with sophisticated story structure and compelling characters that stick with the listener long after the credits roll. We are looking for someone who recognizes and has a deep knowledge and experience in reporting and ambitious storytelling, writes and supports writing with flair and accuracy and has a deep understanding of and love for narrative journalism. In addition, we are looking for an editor who has an inclusive approach to their work, is committed to finding and featuring voices that reflect the full range of the human experience and has the confidence to lean into difficult subjects and nontraditional conversations with sensitivity and an open and perceptive ear.
Performs the duties of Supervising Senior Editor, working closely with unit’s Supervising Senior Producer to guide NPR’s narrative long-form shows to produce original content that pushes the envelope on what’s possible in reporting, storytelling and sound design.
• Partner with ESU’s Supervising Senior Producer on future planning, development of host projects, and strategic partnerships
• Share responsibility for editorial integrity of published products
• Supervise a portion of the reporter/producers of NPR’s Enterprise Storytelling Unit and assist with hiring
• Guide shows and teams on selecting reporting threads, subject matter and tone
• Edit compelling stories for both audio and print, sometimes simultaneously
• Guide and assist hosts and reporters in organizing and focusing their stories throughout the reporting, writing, editing and fact checking processes
• Regularly provide constructive critiques of stories in edits with staff and contributors in group settings, at all times open to new approaches and ideas
• Edit stories for continuity, integrity of journalism, quality of writing, manner of presentation, and consistency of style
• Ensure that all materials aired meet NPR program standards and practices
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
• At least 8 years journalism experience
• Three or more years reporting experience
• Thorough knowledge of and passion for long-form narrative storytelling in the audio space
• Ability to work collaboratively with a highly creative team and a range of experience levels
• Ability to and comfort with iterating on ideas and stories
• Ability to synthesize large amounts of information into actionable tasks and delegate effectively
• Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• Ability and willingness to work on a project-basis and at varied shifts
• Original and enterprise reporting experience
• Significant supervisory experience
• Experience leading highly creative teams
• Audio production background
