OVERVIEW
NPR’s National Desk is looking for a Supervising Editor to help shape coverage of the biggest domestic stories of the day. This editor would ideally be based in the Western United States and lead, assign and edit reporters based in that region of the country. This editor would also have responsibilities for leading and editing topic-area beats. The National Desk covers a broad range of topics, including criminal justice, immigration, reproductive rights, housing, addiction, race and identity, among others. As a desk leader, this person would be a part of the decision-making team setting the National Desk’s agenda for coverage across the country and for editing content for all platforms, including broadcast and digital.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Serve as an editor and manager helping to run the National Desk.
• Develop, assign and edit original and breaking news coverage centered in the Western U.S.
• Develop, assign and edit original and breaking news coverage for topic-area beats.
• Edit compelling stories for both audio and digital, often on tight deadlines.
• Make sure the work is consistently accurate and fair, objective and of high quality.
• Cultivate and promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace.
• Supervise at least five direct reports, including reporters and other staff on the National Desk; preparing their regular performance reviews and making effective recommendations regarding any hiring, promotion and discipline for these positions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• 8-10 years of experience as a news reporter or editor, including demonstrated experience covering national news
• At least 5 years of management experience, with proven success managing a diverse team of employees
• Ability to clearly communicate ideas and act as a skilled collaborator
• Demonstrated experience as an engaged journalist with solid news judgment and driven by a 24-hour news cycle
• Thorough knowledge of news and feature reporting techniques and demonstrated writing and editing ability across multiple platforms
• Willingness and ability to travel
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Knowledge of broadcast writing and audio production. Digital experience preferred.
• Experience working in and/or knowledge of public radio and the public radio system.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
WORK LOCATION
Remote Permitted: This is a remote-permitted role. This role is based out of our Culver City, CA office, but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves.
JOB TYPE: This is a full-time, exempt position.
COMPENSATION
Salary Range: The U.S. based anticipated salary range for this opportunity is $130,000 -$160,000 plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
