Overview:
As the listener's advocate, the Office of the Ombudsman deals with issues of editorial judgment and responds to NPR's audience via e-mail, phone, mail and an online column. Each workday varies depending on what needs to be researched according to NPR’s ethics handbook.
• Responsibilities: Read and answer emails from the audience, flag topics for possible future blog topics.
• Assist with investigation of NPR stories that potentially violate NPR's ethics handbook.
• Act as the office’s “eyes and ears” to discover what issues are of concern to NPR’s listeners.
• Assist with a major project assessing NPR’s coverage of a single topic over time
• Communicate directly with concerned audience members.
• Help devise strategies to increase the Ombudsman office’s social media reach.
• Assistant in planning ethics events and audio with NPR member stations.
Qualifications:
An interest in public radio, critical thinking, a strong sense of journalistic ethics, concern about accuracy, and a passion for detailed research are vital for a successful candidate.
The Ombudsman's intern must possess a flexible and proactive attitude, which is essential to effectively handle the sometimes unpredictable events of the day, and an open mind for hearing NPR’s reporting through other’s perspectives. A track record of “out of the box” thinking and knowledge of digital media is a must.
Candidates with a background in journalism or knowledge of journalism ethics preferred.
Preferred Skills:
• Knowledge of AP Style.
• Comfortable using a CMS.
• Proficient with social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.).
• Experience handling difficult conversations and talking across ideological differences.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to handle criticism.
• Audio production experience
