OVERVIEW
Across our organization, we’re building a workplace where collaboration is essential, diverse voices are heard, and inclusion is the key to our success. We are committed to doing the right thing in our journalism and in every role at NPR. This means that integrity, adherence to our ethical standards, and compliance with legal obligations are fundamental responsibilities for every employee at NPR.
The NPR Climate team is looking for a Senior Editor to shape coverage of the most important climate stories of the moment. The Senior Climate Editor should have deep radio skills as well as solid experience covering climate change. You must be nimble enough to handle stories across NPR’s platforms, including news magazine shows, newscasts, digital and podcasts.
You’ll edit a wide range of topics, from climate science to energy issues to accountability reporting. The Senior Climate Editor’s primary responsibility is to lead a team of climate reporters at NPR stations across the country, which sometimes entails helping early career journalists gain the knowledge and skills to cover climate change in their regions. You will also help guide the network’s climate staff.
We seek candidates eager to do ambitious work. We want people who excel at collaboration within their desks, across a newsroom and sometimes with outside partners. We want editors who understand the central need to bring diverse voices and perspectives to climate coverage. We want candidates who are committed to consistent communication with their reporters so that the editing process helps to build people up, not tear them down.
NPR seeks to define the national conversation on climate. To break stories that could have an impact on people’s lives, especially stories most other media don’t have, or that highlight how climate change worsens existing injustices. Come join us.
The deadline for submitting applications has been extended until 11:59 PT on Friday, August 12, 2022.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Embody our team’s values of collaboration, transparency, consideration, inclusivity and equity
• Develop, assign and edit original and breaking climate coverage that lives up to NPR’s standards for accuracy, fairness and newsworthiness.
• Edit compelling stories for both audio and print, often on tight deadlines.
• Work collaboratively with member station reporters and editors in developing high impact projects connected to significant news developments.
• Edit 1-2 network reporters, providing consistent leadership of the team, including regular constructive feedback on performance.
• Bring rigor and a fastidious attention to detail in every story
• Exhibit a strong command of climate science. You don't need to know everything. But to work with our team, you have to have some level of comfort with climate research.
• Take criticism and suggestions graciously, including from reporters. We’re all here to get better.
