OVERVIEW
NPR is looking for a reporter who brings enthusiasm and curiosity for all things culture, entertainment and music, as well as a deep respect for NPR’s curious audience. They will be responsive to the news and work to identify and explain cultural trends to our broadcast and digital audiences. Their work will include both did-you-know micro-trends and deep dives to explain meaningful cultural change. You will also assist with coverage of obituaries of artists and cultural figures that have had a lasting impact on our world today.
This is a union represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Consistently pitch, plan and report news, feature and original stories about music and cultural trends, bringing characters alive in stories.
• Deliver stories for all NPR programs and platforms with speed and accuracy;
• Maintain a robust story list based on complex and nuanced knowledge of beat;
• Develop and maintain reliable and diverse source relationships that yield consistent original reporting and allow reporter to regularly break news;
• Monitor news and be prepared and able to cover fast-paced breaking news for digital, newscast, and shows;
• Collaborate with editors and show producers to shape on-air discussions and speak fluently and conversationally live on the air;
• Competent in SEO, headline writing and other engagement best practices to ensure that all digital stories produced are ready for posting;
• Consistently explain complex subjects for the general audience and bring characters alive in stories across all platforms;
• Cover stories as assigned by NPR editors, on deadline;
• Work with nuance and pace with minimal supervision, even in complicated situations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Minimum of 5 years of experience reporting stories for broadcast and digital platforms
• Ability to produce high-quality stories quickly under deadline pressure
• Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, with changing priorities/conditions.
• Ability to work independently and also work well as part of a team
• Highly supportive of cultivating and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Daily news experience
• Experience in Digital Media, CMS
• Radio or broadcast experience is extremely desirable
• Experience working in and/or knowledge of public radio and the public radio system
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
WORK LOCATION
• Remote Permitted: This is a remote permitted role. This role is based out of our Washington, DC office but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves.
JOB TYPE
• This is a temporary (9-month) full time position.
COMPENSATION
Salary Range: The U.S. based anticipated salary range for this opportunity is ($105,000 -$105,000) plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
Hourly Rate: The U.S. based anticipated hourly rate for this opportunity is ($50.48- 50.48) per hour. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum hourly rate NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
