Full Time Job
The Production Assistant in our Programming Division will assist in producing material for the NPR Story Lab, an innovation unit in the newsroom that creates podcast pilots, innovative news magazine series, digital projects and prototypes for emerging technologies like smart speakers. This position is currently classified as a short-term, 15-month assignment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Help generate innovative content in the newsroom by fielding ideas from NPR staff and team members
• Produce content for digital media, including scheduling social media posts, writing web builds and newsletters
• Cut, edit and mix audio with guidance from producers and reporters
• Book guests for interviews and conduct research for Story Lab projects
• Gather field tape and sound clips from online and other sources
• Help manage Story Lab projects as needed
• Contribute to the overall journalism of the Story Lab team
• Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
• 1-3 years’ experience in a newsroom environment
• Ability to edit audio
• Strong storytelling sensibilities and an ability to identify anecdotes that can bring a larger idea or research finding to life
• Experience and demonstrated commitment to fact checking
• Thorough knowledge of research tools, including online databases
• Demonstrated writing ability
• Demonstrated ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure
• Ability to handle more than one assignment at a time; ability to prioritize, anticipate and communicate effectively
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating, at all times, respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• This is a unionized SAG – AFTRA position.
EDUCATION
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
PREFERRED SKILLS
• Experience in podcasting and radio broadcasting, including producing in and operating digital audio self-op facilities
• Ability to use recording equipment to gather field sound
• A natural interest in storytelling and news
• Digital media skills, including proficiency in social media as a newsgathering technique
