OVERVIEW

The Indicator from Planet Money is looking for a producer who has a clear sense of the economic news of the day, and a clear idea of how to tell those stories in engaging ways. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, who can deepen and broaden our coverage and inform our audience about the way economics affects the full panoply of individuals and communities. We are looking for a producer who can cut tape at lightning speed, on deadline and within defined time limits. Someone with a honed sense of humor and an ear for great tape, who can make hard calls under time pressure. We’re looking for someone with experience both in the field and in the office: this position comes with a relatively heavy administrative burden, so the producer must be comfortable with, and interested in, all aspects of administration. They must be highly organized, and able to work seamlessly with outside agencies. We are a small but vibrant team on the Indicator. We work hard and fast, and we have a lot of fun producing our show. RESPONSIBILITIES
• Coordinate and run the Indicator’s workflow calendar, including all planning, assignment and editorial meetings.
• Administer the Indicator’s intern program.
• Coordinate all aspects of promos, including generating promos by Indicator hosts and incorporating cross-promos and other outside material on The Indicator.
• Ensure the Indicator is equipped as required to execute programming requirements.
• Coordinate all use of underwriting in Indicator episodes.
• Act as initial point-of-contact for communications with all other NPR agencies, whether outgoing or incoming.
• Coordinate the generation of audio programming content for NPRs broadcast programs Morning Edition and All Things Considered, as directed by the Supervising Editor.
• Coordinate the generation of social media content, as directed.
• Administer larger-scale coverage projects, as directed.
• Assist the Supervising Editor with staff training, as directed.
• Assist the Supervising Editor with the coordination of staffing, as directed.
• Find and produce original story ideas on a tight deadline.
• Suggest and book guests for hosts to interview.
• Prepare stories and approaches for interview, maybe do them yourself.
• Mix podcast episodes using digital audio editing software.
• Write web and social media posts.
• Reply to social media comments and listener questions.
• Think strategically about audience development, and work to execute that strategy.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
REQUIRED SKILLS
• At least four years of audio production experience.
• Audio editing experience in ProTools or equivalent.
• Demonstrated experience in administration, including running calendars, organizing workflow and coordinating aspects of production.
• Proven facility in sourcing and booking guests for a podcast, radio or TV show, or equivalent.
• Demonstrated ability to perform tasks quickly and efficiently on deadline pressure, while maintaining a positive mental attitude.
• Demonstrated experience in finding and pre-interviewing subjects for interview by hosts.
• Ability and willingness to relocate. NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR, and within the public radio system.
PREFERRED SKILLS
• Experience in developing and executing social media strategies.
• Management skills.
• Video editing skills.
• Academic background in economics, or work experience in finance, economic policy, or any other fiend covered by Planet Money.
• Reporting skills.
