NPR is expanding the Wait Wait comedic universe! What does that mean? We’re hiring a producer to help us create funny new podcasts—so if you like having fun at work but know it takes a lot of work to get that fun on air, we’re looking for you. Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me! is one of NPR’s most popular shows and one of the most successful comedy podcasts in the country. Wait Wait wants to build on this enthusiasm and attract new listeners. You will be working closely with the Wait Wait team in all areas of the production of a new comedy podcast and other new projects. Candidates should be highly organized, attentive to detail, great problem solvers and excited about pitching new ideas.
Ideal applicants are good listeners; calm; consistent; clear communicators both in person and in writing. Successful candidates will be great problem solvers and love to figure out how to get the job done. Candidates should be familiar with the voice of Wait Wait and have experience in the comedy world. This role will be crucial in creating new content from conceptualization to completion. The comedy producer is ideally based in New York or Chicago.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop and produce a midweek comedy podcast.
• Support hosts and producers in multiple creative projects that establish and extend NPR’s comedic voice.
• Meet weekly production deadlines for each podcast episode and project
• Participate in all areas of podcast production including audio editing, script writing, research and editorial meetings and potential hosting.
• Records, mixes and edits complex, multi-track audio stories
• Work with social media team to promote comedy extension initiatives
• Handle some logistical planning and communications for a small team
• Screen callers and book on-air talent.
• Conduct varied research related to the needs of the project
• Keep up with current events and the news
• Pitch ideas, guests and narratives and contribute to a writing-room environment
• Manage complex production assignments on a tight deadline.
• Cultivate and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace
• Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
REQUIRED SKILLS
• At least 3-4 years professional experience in podcasting, broadcasting, and / or audio production
• Experience creating new content for podcasting
• Experience working in comedy or with comedians
• Skilled digital audio editor
• Experience with publishing systems and recording equipment
• Demonstrated ability to work well on a small team
• Strong sense of the Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! comedic voice and style.
• Flexible, dependable and have the ability to work with minimal direction and oversight.
• Demonstrated ability to support the production process in audio editing, research scheduling guests, recording interviews, field production, script writing and other production needs
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system

This position is covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. The minimum salary for this position is $90,000.
