Producer / Editor II, All Things Considered
Join the team that helps cut through the flood of daily news with the smartest take on the most important stories of the day, and help create an innovative global/national/local news source.
As a Producer / Editor II, you will book guests, write copy, edit audio for air/publication. You will help shape the sound of and editorial vision for daily news-driven podcast content.
You love news, you love audio. You have a curious mind that’s always searching for context and meaning. Your work will reach audiences across platforms, to help them understand which stories of the day mattered most, and WHY.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Helps conceive, write and produce content
• Leads bookings for newsmakers and other high-profile guests
• Thoroughly prepares hosts on goal of interview and intended narrative arc, and assists in focusing/drafting their stories
• Plans content with a holistic approach to reaching audiences across broadcast/podcast and digital
• Responsible for editorial integrity and quality of air product, ensuring that all materials on air and online meet NPR standards and practices
• Collaborates with colleagues within show and across departments to ensure content is reaching the most people on the most platforms possible
• Ensures that all materials aired meet NPR program standards and practices, including standards of fairness, objectivity, and balance.
• Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience
REQUIRED SKILLS
• Must have at least 5-8 year(s) experience in journalism
• Demonstrated ability to produce highly polished and sophisticated audio content
• Demonstrated ability to organize and disseminate information and to coordinate daily news coverage
• A broad range of general news knowledge
• Ability to identify and secure high-level bookings under stringent deadlines
• Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently, editing audio and writing copy, under deadline pressure
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system
• Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
PREFERRED SKILLS
• Audio news (daily broadcast or podcast) experience strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated writing ability.
• Demonstrated field production and planning experience.
• Experience with the type of audio production done at NPR.
• Experience working in and/or knowledge of public radio and the public radio system.
