NPR’s award-winning Washington Desk produces sophisticated yet accessible coverage of the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court, the Justice Department and electoral politics. Vital to our mission are the following: original reporting, breaking news and ideas with clarity and context and explanatory journalism. Known for our work ethic, the Washington Desk aspires to great storytelling both on air and online. Our coverage is featured on Morning Edition, All Things Considered, NPR.org, The NPR Politics Podcast and Up First.
The Washington Desk is looking for a reporter to cover demographics and the 2020 election campaign. This is a short-term assignment that will begin in September 2019 and last through January 2021. We'll place a premium on those who have a record of generating original reporting, and to those with a demonstrated ability to convey that reporting through live and lively broadcast coverage.
You’ll be expected to hit daily news deadlines, report longer-form feature and enterprise stories and think creatively about how to present your reporting through different media, including audio, text and data visualization. You’ll also be expected to maintain a robust story list and have the ability to report and produce pieces for all NPR programs and platforms with speed and accuracy. Conversational, engaging live broadcast interviews and the ability to share reporting in lively social media conversations are essential skills.
