NPR is seeking a Head of Philanthropy Strategy who will lead the strategic direction of NPR’s philanthropy fundraising to grow individual and institutional donor bases and revenue. The Head of Philanthropy Strategy will provide direction and oversight for a geographically distributed, 15-person staff assigned to the areas of Individual Giving, Institutional Giving, Planned and Principal Giving, and NPR Foundation Board Relations. This individual will proactively seek and implement growth opportunities, ensuring integration of efforts across Development and the NPR network. This position reports directly to the Chief Development Officer (CDO) of NPR and will be one of three members of the CDO leadership team.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead NPR philanthropy fundraising to grow both number of individual and institutional donors and contributed revenue.
• Partner with Trustees to ensure strong Board engagement and alignment.
• Hire and manage a staff who have responsibility for fundraising.
• Oversee the Foundation, Institutional, Individual, and Planned Giving programs, proactively developing strategies for integration and growth.
• Set direction, establish metrics, and lead the staff in the execution of fundraising activities, with accountability to meet fundraising goals.
• As appropriate, lead and participate in relationship development and solicitation efforts of individuals and institutions.
• Collaborate closely with others to ensure a strong case for support and demonstrated impact.
• Liaison with other areas of NPR and externally, represent NPR and the Development Division.
• Partner with Donor Services to ensure the ongoing stewardship of donors and capture of fundraising research and data for renewals and new prospects.
• Partner with Finance to set revenue goals and ensure regular review and input to forecasts.
• Build and reinforce a culture of encouragement, respect and open communication promoting a collegial environment that encourages teamwork and thrives on diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
• Cultivate and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree
REQUIRED SKILLS
• Commitment to NPR’s mission, the broader public radio landscape, and high-quality journalism.
• Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in fundraising from individuals and institutions, including major and planned gifts.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience managing a high-performing fundraising team, including staff oversight.
• A proven track record of delivering philanthropic growth for a mission-based organization.
• Demonstrated ability to strategically move individuals and institutions across the spectrum of prospect development. A history of securing six, seven, and eight-figure gifts, including cultivation through solicitation and stewardship.
• Experience with Board engagement and solicitation.
• Experience working with strategies for identifying and cultivating the next generation of major gift donors.
• Strength in developing the case for support and aligning organization needs with funder interests.
• Ability to effectively engage and strategize with various stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to integrate data into decision-making and strategy development.
• Experience with revenue forecasts.
PREFERRED SKILLS
• Experience within the media industry.
• A passion for the mission and voices of public media.
• Experience with the challenges of working across a large organization and a wide network that has multiple stakeholders and agendas.
• Advanced degree or record of continuing education.
