
Evening Managing Editor

OVERVIEW
Intro to Position
Working primarily out of either our Washington D.C. headquarters or our office at NPR West in Culver City, CA, this role will serve as the network's editorial lead during the evening hours, 3pm - 11pm eastern.
You'll manage the newsroom during the evening, 3pm - 11pm eastern, with focus on breaking news, Morning Edition/UpFirst, Newscast and the early morning news report across all digital platforms. You will drive collaboration across newsgathering and show teams and help build a more integrated newsroom. You will lead editorial meetings as needed, edit copy and broadcast stories as necessary.
This is an NPR editorial role covered under the terms of the NPR Ethics Handbook. All editorial staff are bound by this guidance. Editorial staff is defined as staff members who play a role in shaping the journalistic or creative direction of NPR's content, including events.
Responsibilities
• Partners with other news leaders across NPR's desks, shows and digital operations.
• Supervises assignments and provides editorial guidance to staff, stations, freelance reporters and production staff.
• Manages evening news-gathering teams, overseeing overall performance and editorial direction.
• Works with desks to identify original and distinctive coverage areas to produce a robust morning report across platforms.
• Incorporates data into decision-making.
• Identify targets for short- and long-term collaboration projects.
• Ensures that work produced by NPR News complies with NPR and professional standards for balance, fairness and accuracy.

Minimum Qualifications
• At least 8 years experience managing in news or programming organizations (in a union environment is a plus).
• Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
• Demonstrated ability to generate and execute complex creative ideas and to assimilate and organize large amounts of information.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others.
• Experience working in/closely with digital operations.
• Ability and willingness to relocate.
• Demonstrated experience in leading ambitious and distinctive coverage.

Education Requirements
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary/Benefits
$160,000 - $175,000 /year USD
The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
