This is a Full Time Job
NPR’s flagship morning program and podcast are looking for a developing journalist to join our team as Assistant Editor. The Assistant Editor helps pitch stories, book guests and craft conversations for Morning Edition and the Up First podcast. This person also assists with longer-term initiatives, features and host projects, working under the direct supervision of the Morning Edition leadership team.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Initiates, plans and edits program material for that day’s show/podcast and for future shows/podcasts, under editorial supervision.
• Consistently generates timely and well thought-out story ideas and guest voices for the show.
• Tracks and helps prepare coverage of developing news and responds to breaking news for the Up Frist podcast.
• Books guests, researches conversation topics, assists with scripts and prepares host briefs ahead of interviews.
• Writes news and program copy for both the show and podcast.
• Rotates through a variety of show & podcast shifts, as assigned, including but not limited to overnight, update and swing.
• Works in the field with reporters, producers and hosts as assigned (including projects requiring self-directed research, planning and solid editorial judgment.)
• Maintains internal relationship with program staff, Digital Media staff, reporters/editors contributing to daily program and morning news podcast, as well as departments providing support services.
• Maintains external relationships with commentators, member station personnel providing material for morning news, news sources, journalists from other media freelancers and experts.
• Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with training in library sciences, journalism, and/or research preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS
• A minimum of (2) two years’ experience in journalism.
• Demonstrated news writing skills.
• Experience booking and writing briefs on newsmakers guests.
• Thorough knowledge of research tools.
• Demonstrated ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
PREFERRED SKILLS
• Experience working on a live news program.
• Experience working on a podcast.
• Demonstrated understanding of, and familiarity with, social media platforms.
• Experience producing on MTE, ProTools or similar broadcast digital audio workstations.
