Senior Counsel and Director of Business & Legal Affairs, Original Documentaries (EMEA)
THE OPPORTUNITY
Netflix seeks an experienced attorney to join its London office as a Senior Counsel on the Original Documentaries team -- the team behind popular and award-winning content like Icarus, Virunga, White Helmets, 13th, Making a Murderer, and Dirty Money. The successful candidate will lead business & legal affairs related to the acquisition, development, and production of Netflix's original documentaries and docuseries in countries specifically in and around Europe, and will be an integral part of setting strategy for and scaling our original documentary content both in the US and throughout the world. This executive role will work closely with the US-based team.
REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate should have at least ten years of development and production experience in unscripted factual television and/or documentary film, with direct experience negotiating and drafting all forms of agreements, including talent agreements, production services agreements, and production forms (above-the-line and below-the-line). The successful candidate should also be extremely comfortable dealing directly with productions, as well as communicating across multiple departments within the company situated around the globe. The Senior Counsel would focus his or her time negotiating the commercial terms for projects, negotiating and drafting the related legal agreements, and overseeing production-legal and clearance issues (with the support of internal resources) once projects are green-lit. Knowledge of substantive areas of the law relevant to documentary filmmaking, such as defamation, copyright, and privacy rights, and familiarity with journalistic standards and practices is required.
A successful candidate will also possess the following:
• Excellent leadership, supervisory, interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong analytical capabilities and judgment.
• Ability to work proactively, independently, and reliably under tight timeframes in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work effectively and collaboratively, think practically and be solution-oriented.
• Willingness to tackle matters outside their area of expertise.
