The NBCUniversal News Group is seeking an experienced journalist and newsroom leader with deep business and financial news expertise to serve as Director of Standards for CNBC. This person will work closely with colleagues across CNBC divisions, and the wider NBCUniversal News Group, to ensure that editorial decision-making across the organization is aligned with our values and editorial guidelines.
Reporting to the News Group's Senior Vice President and Head of News Standards, with a strong dotted line to senior management at CNBC, the Director of Standards will be the point person for helping guide journalists working on both digital and television content under the CNBC brand. They will work with managers at CNBC to set and maintain editorial and ethical guidelines and safeguard the credibility and integrity of our journalism on all platforms. They will also be part of the larger NBCU News Group Standards Team and work closely with colleagues on that team.
Responsibilities:
• Work with senior-level editorial teams across CNBC's platforms to set editorial and ethical guidelines
• Review scripts, articles and social posts for accuracy, fairness, transparency and adequate sourcing and attribution
• Consult with editorial leaders on difficult or complex publishing decisions with standards implications
• Consult with commercial leaders to ensure that sponsored content and brand marketing endeavors align with the organization's editorial values and guidelines
• Help uphold overall News Group-wide standards policies and guidelines
• Provide editorial guidance to journalists on NBCUniversal's news standards
• Ensure that new and current employees are continually educated on News Group standards & practices.
• This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of 3 days per week.
Qualifications
• Must have a Bachelor's degree or higher
• At least 5 years experience working in a fast-paced, daily newsroom
• Deep expertise in finance, technology and/or business journalism
• Leadership or management experience
• Exceptional news and editorial judgment
• Experience in journalism or news media
• Must have flexibility around working hours, including some weekends and evenings
• Ability to handle confidential material with complete discretion
• Proven ability to remain calm in a high-pressure environment
• Ability to communicate effectively and successfully with all levels of talent and management
• Ability to organize and schedule work effectively while meeting deadlines
• Strong business ethics, demonstrated professionalism and sound judgment
• Familiarity with both television and digital journalism and social media standards and practices
• Self-starter; able to work independently and proactively
• Strong writing and editorial skills
• Must be open to learning and using new technology
