Role Summary/Purpose: As an Assignment Editor on the Network News Desk, you will work alongside a shift-based team and in collaboration with the bureaus on all domestic news coverage. You will work to provide editorial and logistical support to all platforms across broadcast, cable, digital and streaming. Responsibilities: • Coordinate the gathering and feeding of news materials
• Effectively research & implement coverage of breaking news & on-going stories
• Ability to jump in & quickly assess what is needed on coverage of a breaking story
• Collaborate with NBC News digital, streaming and broadcast platforms on newsgathering, social media initiatives and content distribution
• Communicate with important groups such as Legal, Standards, R&C to make sure appropriate editorial/usage guidance and is obtained and disseminated to all platforms
• Use data to inform and evolve newsgathering, storytelling and audience engagement
• Initiate & maintain communication with affiliates & News Channel counterparts
• Effective use & monitoring of social media sites & the web
• Facilitate and manage requests from all platforms for field teams on assignment
• Participate in daily network-wide conferences
• Establish & maintain working story & contact files
• Monitor competitive broadcasts, cable and digital platforms
• Ability to put together a story coverage plan & layout with oversight from management
• Work closely with Network, MSNBC & NBC News Now teams to accommodate their on-air needs (breaking news, correspondent requests, etc.)
• Coordinate with technical and operations staff on resource mgmt. and to bring in elements
• This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of 3 days per week. Qualifications Qualifications/Requirements:
• Minimum 3 years editorial production experience at a network, cable or digital outlet
• Proficient on newsroom systems and all social media outlets
• Solid working knowledge of TV production, affiliates & satellite operations
• Strong news judgment & communication skills are essential
• Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment & prioritize assignments
• Must be willing and able to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays and overnights, under tight deadline pressure, occasionally with little or no warning
• Must be a team player, collaboration is key
• Demonstrates strong knowledge and interest in news & current events
• Must be willing to work in New York, NY Desired Characteristics: • Ability to clearly communicate directives and status updates to both technical and non-technical resources
• Experience in major market or network with big breaking news
• Able to work both independently and as a member of a team
• Capable of managing multiple deliverables and completing assigned tasks quickly
• Passion for news and an interest in multiple platforms (broadcast, cable, web, mobile)
• Innovative and flexible thinker, comfortable suggesting solutions
• Committed to quality in every assignment, large or small
• Strong research skills and editorial judgment
• Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines
• Strong interpersonal skills
