Responsibilities
Role Summary/Purpose:
As a Sr. Assignment Manager on the Network News Desk, you will work alongside the senior management team and in collaboration with the bureaus on all domestic news coverage. You will oversee a team of assignment editors and others on your shift to provide news content for all platforms across broadcast, cable, digital and streaming.
Essential Responsibilities:
• Manage the gathering & dissemination of news to provide for all platforms
• Research & launch coverage of breaking news, on-going stories & features
• Supervise assignment editors and others (researchers, news associates, etc.) on your shift
• Closely work with bureau/regional management, NBC News broadcast senior management, NBCNEWS.com, to set-up & organizing story elements for all NBC News platforms.
• Communicate to/from important groups such as Legal, Standards, R&C to make sure appropriate editorial guidance and is both obtained and then disseminated to all platforms
• Monitor social media, competitive broadcast & cable news entities
• Initiate and maintain communication with News Channel, News Partnerships and other affiliate counterparts
• Coordinate between shows/platforms to avoid redundancy in resource deployment or external outreach
• Organize, update & maintain Domestic working story & contact files in iNews
• Ability to jump in & quickly gauge what is needed on coverage of a breaking story
• Flag newsworthy events to Specials Unit, main contact to aid in their decision whether to break into programming, and communicate all developments/elements for special programming when they do
• Participate in/lead daily company-wide conference calls and special coverage calls as needed
• Work closely with MSNBC & NBC News Now teams to accommodate their on-air needs (breaking news, correspondent requests, etc.) and help plan upcoming/next-day coverage
• Coordinate with technical and operations staff on resource mgmt. and to bring in elements
Qualifications/Requirements
Basic Qualifications:
• Must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent years experience
• Minimum 3 years assignment desk experience and 2 years management of other people required
• Experience in major market or network with big breaking news
• Solid working knowledge of newsroom systems & satellite operations is critical
• Strong understanding & experience in digital & social media
• Clear understanding & experience with newsroom computers & files
• Working knowledge of technical aspects of broadcast & digital production including digital journalism, microwave & satellite trucks, Latakoo, Live-u, & B-Gan
• Must be willing to work early morning shift with flexibility for additional hours and on weekends with short notice
• Must be “on call†24/7 days a week for major breaking news, maintain knowledge of current events
