This is a Full Time Job
This person should be an experienced journalist with a proven track record of impeccable news judgment. The person should feel comfortable handling complex and sensitive journalism across a wide range of subject areas and have the ability to read copy for rigor while serving as a final editor before publication.
Just as equally, the right candidate will be an exceptional editor and writer, able to elevate copy as the story demands. The mainbar of the day’s major news should have scope and sweep, the piece of rapid enterprise reporting should have excellent transitions, the day 2 follow should have a concise narrative arc, and so on.
The editor should also have an encouraging and motivating manner with the reporting and editing teams, and be able to tell when more information is needed before publication.
This person will report to the senior executive editor. The role is based in New York or Los Angeles. The person should feel comfortable working a later day, as the majority of the copy is delivered in the afternoon to early evening.
Qualifications
- 15 years as a journalist
- Excellent writing and editing skills, able to topread copy and make it sing
- Track record of managing and developing a team
- Exceptional news judgment, with an ability to see the bigger story or where the story is going
- Ability to communicate clearly – with authority and also humility – across a wide variety of teams and stakeholders
- Ability to work collaboratively with other digital managing editors, standards & legal team and other newsroom stakeholders
- Ability to juggle several pieces of copy at once, and the ability to triage
Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of four days per week.
