Overview-
This role will be responsible for developing, maintaining, overseeing and communicating comprehensive research and analytics function within Basketball Operations, reporting to the General Manager and Head Coach. Deliver positive collaborative leadership and support all areas of Basketball Operations to cultivate evidence-based, process-oriented and data driven decision making while maintaining key relationships with the front office staff, coaching staff, player care and performance team, and the analytics team.
Responsibilities
-
Conduct research to improve the organization's understanding of the game of basketball
• Develop and implement strategic plans and objectives for the group in alignment with Basketball Operations
• Provide overall direction to the development of advanced analytic solutions and strategies to new and existing models to aid in decision-making
• Manage a talented staff (developers, analysts, and consultants) by cultivating a collaborative culture, prioritizing work flows, supervising projects and serving as the principal liaison between basketball analytics and operations
• Present high-level analysis in a concise, effective and articulate manner using data visualizations and reports that enhance the Department's decision-making process
• Partner with Medical and Athletic Performance coaches to gather and analyze data to prepare players for peak performance
• Monitor, identify, recommend and implement new and/or emerging processes, technologies, models and algorithms applicable to internal processes
• Oversee the departmental budget associated with R&D spending
• Contribute to collaborative basketball decisions by proactively generating ideas, concepts and well-reasoned rationales for player acquisition and usage, development, style of play and overall sports performance
• Guide the application of innovative techniques to solve new problems through combining abstract ideas and real-world context
• Perform advanced statistical analysis on large volumes of basketball-related data
• Other projects as directed the Basketball Operations leadership team
Qualifications
•
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in statistics, engineering, applied math, physics, quantitative social sciences, computer science, operations research or similar field; Advanced degree preferred
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
• Demonstrated work ethic, passion for basketball, and strong basketball knowledge, including familiarity with current basketball research and analysis
• Demonstrated project management, problem-solving, and teaching abilities
• Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analytical concepts at an appropriate level to a wide variety of audiences within basketball and business operations
• Experience in managing a cross-functional team of analysts and software developers
• Demonstrated expert-level knowledge with basketball-specific data, modern statistical techniques, and sabermetric analysis
• Demonstrated expertise with R, Python, or similar software
• Demonstrated expertise with database systems such as SQL Server, My SQL, or Oracle, along with database administration/structuring, data warehousing and data modeling experience
• Knowledge and demonstrated ability in the areas of programming, software-coding, ETL, and/or machine learning techniques
