JOB DESCRIPTION
National Geographic Expeditions provides curious travelers the opportunity to explore the world on a wide variety of travel experiences, from independent stays at our Unique Lodges or Private Expeditions or group departures on land, sea, or by private jet.
Our Operation Support group within Expeditions provides database support to our marketing and sales teams, coordinates with our travel partners and customer service teams to ensure they have the supplies and training they need to provide our travelers a high-quality experience, and are responsible for reporting on finances and traveler transactions.
As our work relates to each of the other groups within Expeditions–product design, marketing, brand management, sales, guest relations, and our international group –the Operations Support Intern will have the ability to gain a varied and wholistic view of the many factors impacting successful travel programs.
The Operations Support Intern will assist members of our team with:
• Ongoing database tasks which ensure accurate traveler information. Example tasks are updating contact records with marketing preferences, eliminating duplicate records in our system, and comparing our records with our suppliers. Through such work the intern will learn the value of knowing who your customer is, how they are interacting with your product, and the importance of accurate recordkeeping.
• Creating and sending communications to guests who are being welcomed into our loyalty program or who may have had a disappointing travel experience. This can allow the intern to learn how to do a mail merge, gain experience in assessing guest feedback, and observe appropriate customer communications strategies. The intern will work to develop a more streamlined process/attractive presentation for future travel credits extended as an apology, and to improve our documentation of existing credits.
• Compiling and categorizing educational content. The intern will work with our pre-trip task force on compiling a library of materials which will be given to guests in advance of travel to add value to their experience. As we start to develop an online resource for our guests, we will require an inventory and organized repository of the content that we seek to distribute, and this will help the intern learn about project management and planning.
• Documenting usage of our database systems and supporting new development testing. Our database supports a wide variety of program types and not all data collected by different product lines is similar. The intern can help assess the ways in which our data could be more consistent, or where we could use tools in our database to improve processes. The intern will also be able to learn about new projects we are implementing as they participate in testing and Q.C. of new data feeds.
This intern will also attend our team department meetings so he/she can observe the challenges that our team members face, and learn from the issues and solutions decided upon.
