Position Summary:
The Photo Editor, Animals is responsible for researching, curating, and editing visual content for National Geographic’s digital and print platforms, including NationalGeographic.com, its app, social media platforms like Instagram, and newsletters. This role emphasizes natural history but also includes travel, science, health, and history. The editor will collaborate with staff and contributing photographers to ensure visually compelling and accurate stories.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Photographic Research: Research and curate images, ensuring quality and rights clearance for all platforms. Coordinate workflow, billing, contracts, and photo logistics, while ensuring budget and deadlines are met.
• Digital Production: Design and build visual stories in CMS, optimizing visual pacing for digital platforms.
• Photo Production: Collaborate with photographers on conceptual or still-life shoots, either in studio or on location.
• Pitch Innovative Ideas: Research and pitch new ways to use existing visuals in packages that cater to various platforms and audiences.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in photo research or editing
• Strong knowledge and appreciation for visual storytelling and photojournalism
• Experience with image research (agencies, archives, social media)
• Excellent multitasking skills, with the ability to manage short- and long-term deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Proficiency with web tools and programs, including CMS, Adobe Photoshop, Bridge, Media Pro, and knowledge of social media platforms
• Ability to negotiate rates with contractors and third parties
Preferred Qualifications:
• Knowledge of National Geographic’s core areas: wildlife, history, archaeology, science, and travel
Education:
• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Photojournalism
Salary Range:
• $77,100 to $103,400 annually
