JOB DESCRIPTION
The Editorial Assistant for the National Geographic Kids Books team will provide support in all stages of the publication of the 100 titles/year children's book list. This position will support senior editorial staff in the administration, commissioning, planning, and production of children's books. The Editorial Assistant will act as a liaison for the book teams, both in-house and externally, and manage a small number of titles (approx. 5 per year) as the acquiring editor, learning publishing skills from a more experienced editor.
Responsibilities
• Assist the VP, Editorial Director, Kids Books, in administrative oversight of the department, including scheduling departmental, planning, and acquisition board meetings, coordinating travel, and creating presentations.
• Participate in supervised editorial activities such as commenting on manuscripts, writing flap copy, performing book and market research, creating information sheets for books, and assisting in project acquisition by reading and evaluating proposals, queries, and unsolicited manuscripts and presenting ideas at editorial meetings.
• Assist in shepherding book projects through team by acting as the second editor on approx. 5–10 titles, assisting with review of initial outlines and manuscripts, coordinating with in-house and external contributors to keep projects on-time and on-budget, and monitoring projects through multiple stages of page proof.
• With guidance, acquire, manage budgets, hire teams, and project manage a small number of books each year.
• Work with the department to improve administrative systems and perform other administrative duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree, ideally in English or Journalism
• Must be a very skilled communicator and writer
• Must be able to effectively use all basic office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and quickly learn our proprietary database
