JOB DESCRIPTION
This position will be responsible for the initial and continuous reporting, as well as researching of story ideas and photography plans, for the creation and development of articles published in National Geographic magazine across platforms and time frames. This is a hybrid position, dividing time between National Geographic Headquarters in Washington, D.C., and working remotely from home.
Responsibilities:
• Report, research, and edit content for NGM articles in development
• Compile, organize, and provide research materials to photo editors for planning of photo coverage
• As needed, compile, organize, and provide research materials to text editors for planning of text coverage
• Find and communicate with experts; identify and acquire authoritative information
• Monitor and edit content during development and production process, ensuring accuracy of final product
• Write and/or edit notes of intent as needed
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with experts and sources
Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years of editorial or research experience.
• Familiarity with National Geographic core storytelling lenses including archaeology, geography, culture and history, environment, travel, and natural history.
• Good communication skills, including the ability to concisely explain a problem and to articulate a solution.
• Management and people skills to deal positively and productively with a wide range of personalities across multiple disciplines
• Ability to grasp and critically evaluate new subject matter quickly.
• Familiarity with software and websites used in editorial and research activities (e.g., Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, search and index services).
• Sound journalistic judgment and the ability to balance accuracy with compelling narrative and visual storytelling. Curiosity about topics covered in National Geographic Partners products.
• Superior organization and the ability to budget time and handle several tasks simultaneously under the pressure of tight deadlines.
