Motion Picture Industry Pension & Health Plans (MPI) seeks a Director of Residuals to lead residual operations, including processing, allocations, reporting, audits, collections, and related analysis. This role oversees the Residuals team, drives process improvement and system implementation initiatives, and provides reporting and insights to executive leadership, the Audit & Collections Committee, and the Board.
The ideal candidate brings strong entertainment industry residuals knowledge, demonstrated leadership experience, strong people management, sound judgment, and the ability to translate complex residuals matters into clear, practical information for internal and external stakeholders.
What You Will Need:
Bachelor’s degree required; degree in finance, accounting, business administration, entertainment/media, or related field preferred.
Minimum 10 years of related industry experience, preferably with significant experience in residuals.
Minimum 5 years of leadership experience, with demonstrated ability to manage, coach, develop, and hold staff accountable.
Understanding of Guild Collective Bargaining Agreements, residual reporting requirements, compliance obligations, contract interpretation and related operational processes. Experience with residual calculations and audits a plus.
Experience leading system implementations, workflow redesigns, process improvement initiatives, and operational enhancements
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to identify risks and improve controls within well-documented processes.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively manage complex operational matters and communicate to executive leadership, Board members, internal teams, and external stakeholders.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a dynamic environment with a high degree of accuracy, organization, and follow through and work extended hours as required.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and working knowledge of other Microsoft Office applications; experience with residuals, payroll, production accounting, ERP, workflow, reporting, or document management systems is a plus.
High level of professionalism, integrity, discretion, and confidentiality with the ability to build productive relationships, mentor staff, and foster an accountable, service-oriented team culture.
What You’ll Do:
Residuals Operations & Reporting:
Oversee residual operations from contribution allocation through processing, reporting, collection, aging analysis, and auditing.
Ensure residual contribution allocations between Plan entities are accurate, timely, and consistent with applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements or actuarial projection funding requirements.
Analyze agreements and contracts to support accurate residual calculations, compliance, and reporting treatment.
Coordinate residual audits of studios, streamers, and distribution companies with the third-party audit firm, including audit announcements, planning, status tracking, and follow up. Proactively lead discussions to resolve findings, collect amounts due, and confirm appropriate calculations for future reporting.
Oversee recurring residuals reporting, including monthly audit receivables and aging, residual funding, periodic statistical, and other reports needed to support financial oversight and decision-making.
Analyze residuals collections, audit receivables, aging, variances, trends, and issues to identify risks, drive follow-up, support timely resolution, and improve collection outcomes.
Provide residuals-related financial reporting and analytics to support Accounting, actuarial projections, collective bargaining negotiations, forecasting, and other financial planning or oversight needs.
Translate residuals data into clear, actionable summaries and presentations for executive leadership, the Audit & Collections Committee, and the Board, highlighting collections activity, audit status, aging trends, financial impact, key risks, unresolved issues, and recommendations.
Process Improvement, Controls & Systems:
Lead implementation and ongoing enhancement of the residuals system, including process and workflow design, testing, training, data validation, user acceptance and adoption, and continuous improvement.
Lead the development of a structured tracking and follow-up process for High-Budget SVOD residuals, using available contract, production, reporting, and other information to improve expected reporting and collections, escalate issues, and support timely collections.
Evaluate existing residuals processes and lead initiatives to simplify, standardize, and strengthen recurring reporting practices. Identify opportunities to automate or streamline residuals processing, exception tracking, reconciliations, reporting, and management oversight.
Develop and maintain policies, desktop procedures, tracking tools, and reporting resources to support consistent operational controls and training.
Partner with IT and stakeholders to ensure residuals systems, reports, workflows, and data structures support operational and reporting needs for management, the Audit & Collections Committee, and the Board.
Stakeholder Communication & Issue Resolution:
Serve as a senior residuals resource to executive leadership, Board members, internal teams, employers, unions, studios, payroll companies, legal counsel, and other stakeholders.
Communicate complex residuals matters clearly, including operational status, risks, exceptions, recommended actions, and potential impacts.
Exercise sound judgment in identifying and appropriately escalating sensitive or high-risk issues.
Build productive working relationships across departments and with external stakeholders while maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and accountability.
Team Leadership & Development:
Lead, coach, and develop the Residuals team, including workload planning, training, and performance management. Develop team performance metrics and management tools to evaluate productivity, quality, and service levels to identify opportunities for improvement.
Set clear expectations, establish priorities, monitor progress, and hold staff accountable for accuracy, timeliness, responsiveness, judgement, and follow-through.
Strengthen team capability and continuity through clear procedures, cross-training, delegation, professional development, and thoughtful succession planning.
