Overview
The Managing Editor serves in the Number Two role in the newsroom. This position is the keeper of the content. It oversees the news of the day, working with the assignment desk, producers and reporters to maximize high quality, journalistically ethical output. The managing editor is responsible for short and long-term planning, special projects, hiring, employee schedules and other day-to-day operations of the newsroom.
Job Duties
• Assist the news director to manage all aspects of the News Department
• Manage the planning and coordination of daily news coverage
• Create planning calendar for the year to organize all special project dates and deadlines
• Oversee planning and execution of all special projects
• Assist reporters in locating contacts and content for daily reports
• Perform script approval for reporters as needed
• Attend daily rundown meetings and approve producer rundowns as needed
• Create and maintain employee schedules, approve time-off requests and coordinate staffing coverage
• • Ensure on-air and digital platform content meets high journalistic standards
• Ensure breaking news is covered aggressively
• Find enterprise story ideas through developing and maintaining sources and contacts in the community
• Bring positive attitude to work each day
• Inspire high newsroom morale
• Participate in weekend on-call rotation
Requirements & Skills:
• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience
• Minimum five years' experience in a news leadership role, or comparable experience
• Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously Short- and long-term news coverage planning is essential
• Manage multiple assignments in a high pressure, breaking news environment
• Strong journalistic skills and news judgement
• Willing to work weekends or extra hours on short notice as needed
Compensation - $100,000-$110,000 commensurate with experience and skill level
