Overview
Partners with the assignment manager in planning, preparing and managing KTLA's daily news coverage, generating 12½ hours of content daily, and overseeing a staff of 27 field reporters and 40 photographers. Candidates must have outstanding editorial skills and news judgment in addition to the ability to effectively lead and manage the assignment desk team.
Requirements and Responsibilities:
• Intimate working knowledge of the diverse cultures, demographics, issues and lifestyles which distinguish southern California as a unique television market.
• Strong logistical knowledge of the region and its multiple jurisdictions, including travel times.
• Superior social media skills and ability to source digital media for potential stories.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to share information across both broadcast and digital platforms.
• Quick-thinking and decisive. Ability to make decisions under tight deadlines in a sometime stressful environment
• Ability to innovate creative solutions and troubleshoot unexpected problems under pressure.
• Must be forward-thinking and able to anticipate future needs and respond accordingly.
• Coordinate live-shots and content-sharing among multiple sources, including CNN and Nexstar.
• Ability to effectively monitor multiple police and fire scanners for breaking news.
• Assist assignment manager with scheduling, employee recruitment and training.
• Supervise, mentor and manage KTLA's desk assistants and interns.
Qualifications:
• Minimum ten years of experience as an assignment editor in a major market, preferably Los Angeles.
• Previous management experience desired, but not necessarily required.
