Objective
The Senior Major Gifts Officer (SMGO) will play an integral role in securing and increasing philanthropic support for the mission and strategic priorities of PBS SoCal | KCET. An experienced, senior member of an expanding Major Gift Team, the SMGO will manage a portfolio of 120-150 current and potential major donors at various stages of the giving cycle. The SMGO will work strategically to qualify, cultivate, solicit, steward, engage and recognize donors to meet established fundraising goals and objectives. This individual will also develop and strengthen relationships with donors through regular communication and personal visits, which may require frequent travel to various regions across Southern California. To succeed, the SMGO needs to be a dynamic and engaging fundraiser who is skilled at matching donors’ charitable interests and passions to the needs of the organization, providing compelling and meaningful giving opportunities, and helping donors make a difference through public media they cannot make anywhere else.
Success in the first 90 Days
• Day 30: Working knowledge of the PBS SoCal | KCET team, organization, mission and fundraising priorities
• Day 60: Familiarity with assigned donor portfolio and conducting donor outreach
• Day 90: Creating revenue goals and strategic plans for assigned donors, and are progressing well with donor visits
Essential Functions
• Achieve annual performance metrics and funding goals through proper solicitation and management of prospective and current donors
• Develop and Implement customized cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, donor engagement and recognition strategies for current and potential major donors. This includes: the development and maintaining of working relationships with donors, volunteers, board members, colleagues, and other stakeholders, and participation in local and regional donor events,
• Successfully manage portfolio of 120-150 current or potential donors including: the creation of donor corresponded, briefings, proposals, regular donor updates, and other donor related communications, management of donor profiles, contacts, and reporting via- the donor management system, and continued education regarding the public media industry and fundraising, major giving, and donor relations trends
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree, or relevant education or experience (a combination of education and experience will be considered)
• Must have a minimum of seven years of experience in donor cultivation, personal solicitation of major gifts, donor stewardship, portfolio management, and prospect and volunteer management
• Strong fundraising skills and experience with individual giving (campaign experience preferred)
• Familiarity of standard office productivity software (e.g. Microsoft Office and 365 programs and products), including: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams
• Proficiency with constituent management and fundraising software (Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge NXT experience a plus)
• Demonstrated track record of successful major gift and blended gift solicitations
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and work with diverse individuals and groups at all organizational levels, both internal and external to the organization. This includes: demonstrated ability to communicate persuasively, both orally and in writing, about private gift fundraising
• Ability to cooperate, navigate challenges, think creatively and work collaboratively both within the Major Gifts team and the larger Advancement team, as well as cross-functionally with other teams in the organization
• Ability to use tact and diplomacy, and handle confidential, sensitive information with the highest degree of professionalism
• Ability to work independently, take initiative, exercise discretion and judgment, and ability to deal with ambiguity
• Proven ability to plan, coordinate, and implement multiple projects of varying natures simultaneously under tight deadlines
• Goal-oriented, highly self-motivated, high attention to detail
• Ability to work evenings and weekends
• Ability to travel to regions within Southern California as needed
• Demonstrated passion for the importance, urgency, exclusivity, and power of public media to improve lives in Southern California communities
• Maintain compliance with the Public Media Group of Southern California and AFP ethics and standards
Preferred Qualifications
• Certified Fund-Raising Executive certification preferred.
• Experience working with board and advisory council members.
• Familiarity and experience with the Orange County philanthropy community
• Zoom and Slack experience preferred.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, it is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is also required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Additionally, the Senior Major Gifts Officer must also be able to effectively communicate with the many stakeholders including the community and organizational partners.
Work Environment
The working conditions are primarily a general office or home setting. However, the position will require off-site travel to donors and local community partners as necessary. Depending on the position, job duties, and subject to the discretion of the company, the position may be telecommuting eligible in whole or part.
