Job Title: Senior Director- Community Impact
Job Summary: The Senior Director - Community Impact provides leadership, direction and support for the Kansas City Royals' Community Impact department and oversees all operations for Royals Charities, the Club's non-profit charitable foundation. This role reports to the Vice President, Community Impact and is responsible for implementing the vision, mission and strategy of Royals Charities - achieving measurable impact for the community and the club. The Senior Director - Community Impact leads a team of six full-time staff and manages the P&L of Royals Charities including revenue generation and expense management.
Founded in 2001, Royals Charities is the official team charity of the Kansas City Royals. Since its inception, Royals Charities has donated over $23 million to 148 local nonprofit and community organizations. Funds are raised through individual donations, a 50/50 raffle during every homestand, as well as events including Diamond of Dreams, Sluggerrr Run, the Broadcast Auction, Royals Charities Celebrity Golf Tournament and Queens of the Diamond. In addition, Royals Charities provides financial support to help improve baseball and softball fields across a seven-state region in the Midwest.
Position Accountabilities/Responsibilities:
Royals Charities Donation and Grants Oversight
• Crafts the overall grantee portfolio for RC and Royalty Fields and ultimately prepares and approves the slate of grants that is presented at RC Board meetings
• Leads team to monitor and evaluates grantees to ensure they are meeting programmatic milestones; and conducting site visits & providing technical assistance/guidance to grantees
• Resolves challenges or issues that arise with any potential or current grantees and responds to selected Royals Charities and grant inquiries
Fundraising
• Works with VP, Community Impact to develop a long-term fundraising strategy for Royals Charities that deepens connections with current fans and resonates with new segments
• Accountable for setting and achieving Royals Charities' financial goals through innovative fundraising activities and increased community awareness
• Leads overall fundraising portfolio (from 50/50 to payroll deduction) including strategic direction, execution and administration
• Works with the Brand team to oversee and execute marquee fundraising activities like Diamond of Dreams and Queens of the Diamond
• Enhances current fundraising activities and develops new ways to generate revenue for Royals Charities
Financial Compliance
• Manages the P&L of Royals Charities including revenue generation and expense management
• Monitors and approves weekly, monthly and yearly spending; and oversees reconciliation of bank statements and works with team, finance and vendors/partners to resolve any discrepancies/issues
• Works with RC team and Finance to track and arrange payments for grantees, RC and Community Impact partners, and vendors – ensuring timely payments to vendors
• Works with Finance to develop and review mandatory financial reports and statements
Partnerships
• Maintains strong relationships with current community partners and develops new partnerships that drive impact for the community and the club
• Partners closely with internal partners from business and baseball operations to facilitate the participation of employees, players and alumni in Royals Charities and Community Impact department activities
• Works closely with the Corporate Partnerships and Brand team to ensure that Royals Charities and broader community impact efforts are effectively positioned in new and existing business opportunities and executed throughout the year
Staff Oversight
• Responsible for managing/supervising staff and ongoing performance evaluation
• Provides training and mentoring of staff
Comms & PR
• Represents the Royals and Royals Charities at public and private events and with donors, media, fans and other community stakeholders
• Develops written communications for internal and external audiences that articulate Royals Charities' impact
• Works with Brand and Comms teams to incorporate Royals Charities and Community Impact Department contributions to MLB-led and other Club-led activations
• Leads in-game planning and execution of Royals Charities and Community Impact Department initiatives including the Buck Seat, Salute to Service and Board Governance
• Together with the board, drives the overall direction of Royals Charities to ensure oversight, strategic planning, decision-making and financial planning fall under governance guidelines
• Plans board meetings and prepares all necessary support materials; including recording and maintaining official records of minutes and governing documents
• Implements board feedback and assists the Board to maintain effective governance practices
Position Qualifications, Skills, and Experience Required:
• College degree, plus a minimum of 10-15 years working in non-profit, charitable capacities or similar field
• Experience developing and executing on a vision, mission and strategy of an organization with demonstrated impact for both the community and the organization
• Experience developing (and improving existing) charitable programs, donations/grants, and partnerships that amplify an organization's commitment to making a positive impact in the community
• Proven experience and results in fundraising strategy and execution
• Experience working with non-profit boards to develop and execute a vision for an organization, as well as ensuring good governance practices
• Experience building, developing and managing diverse teams and creating a positive and high-performing organizational culture
• Excellent financial acumen including significant experience with developing and managing budgets
• Experience representing an organization in the community including public speaking, giving interviews and coordinating efforts with high-profile individuals and projects
• World-class verbal and written communication skills
• Unquestionable judgement and exhibits the highest level of personal integrity and ethics
• Excellent organizational and time management skills as well as the ability to meet deadlines
• Knowledge of the game of baseball and business of professional sports preferred
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
• Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings as needed
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to lift items weighing as much as 15 pounds
• Must be able to work in a seated position for majority of workday
• Must be able to be productive utilizing a computer keyboard and telephone
• Must be able to be productive in a work environment where the noise level can be high at times
• Must be comfortable walking to navigate the facility to access the office, concourse, etc.
• Must be able to work extended hours and/or weekends as required by deadlines and event scheduling
