SUMMARY OF POSITION
Telepictures Productions Inc., an Emmy award winning and industry leading producer of syndicated programming including Ellen, Extra, TMZ, Judge Mathis and Judge Pirro, seeks a Vice President, Legal & Business Affairs. Reporting to the EVP Business & Legal Affairs, the position is a senior team member of the Business and Legal Affairs department with a main focus on first run production.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Business Affairs: Responsible for negotiating and drafting talent agreements and show staff agreements for existing television shows, web and new media projects, and distribution of various projects. Responsible for negotiating and drafting numerous overall development deals for specific projects and creative staff. Responsibilities also include drafting and updating numerous forms for use in the production of existing shows and shows in development, including but not limited to, contestant releases, participant releases, clip licenses, still licenses, disclosure agreements, location agreements, interview agreements, audience agreements, arbitration and witness agreements, and service agreements. Also responsible for drafting and updating employment forms, including but not limited to, standard employment agreements, writers’ agreements, talent agreements, standard terms and conditions, and confidentiality agreements. Also responsible for negotiating, drafting or assisting in drafting agreements and documents such as: press releases, term sheets, non-disclosure agreements, distribution agreements, technology agreements, research and media sales agreements, and separation agreements. Oversee contract database including option notices, option tracking, and form agreements.
Legal Affairs: Responsible for dispensation of legal advice with respect to numerous legal issues that arise on a daily basis relating to existing shows and their web sites, web and new media projects, and numerous shows in development (including but not limited to, questions involving issues of copyright, trademark, defamation, privacy, intrusion, trespass, eavesdropping, fraud, etc.). Responsibilities also include conducting routine seminars for staff on legal issues and guidelines. The position also includes responding to threats of lawsuits and retaining and supervising outside counsel for claims that cannot be settled on an informal basis. Responsibilities at times also include coordinating on issues with attorneys in affiliated entities.
Employee/Labor Relations: In conjunction with Human Resources, responsibilities include handling employee claims, and questions of all types. When needed, responsible for retaining and supervising outside counsel for claims that cannot be settled on an informal basis. Responsibilities also include witnessing and documenting employee discipline and/or termination activities and providing advice with respect to union issues. Also responsible for conducting meetings with management regarding overtime and other employment laws.
Supervision and Assistance: Responsibilities include supervision of and assistance to Contract Administrators and other lawyers in the department.
Other job-related duties or projects as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school required.
MS Word, Outlook, and Excel required.
Knowledge in media law required.
Extensive knowledge of television production clearance required.
Minimum 7 years experience in negotiating and drafting variety of television and/or other media deals including production and distribution required.
Television and other media production clearance experience required.
Distribution experience preferred.
Some experience with employment and/or labor law preferred.
Active member in good standing with The State Bar of California.
May travel outside of LA up to 5% of time.
Must be able work effectively under strict time constraints and meet deadlines.
Must be able to work effectively with all levels of management, staff, agents and other outside third parties.
Must be tactful in resolving problems.
Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
Position requires additional hours and frequent availability.
