Brooklyn performance and civic space Jack seeks an imaginative and resourceful leader with a passion for the arts and a track record of organizational stewardship. While the focus of this role is the overall fundraising, business, administrative, and operational management of Jack, we seek a collaborator with a passion for radical and community-driven performance. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, and is responsible for leadership of financial management, fundraising, facility and staff management, and external relations.
Primary Responsibilities:
Manage Jack's annual budget, including leading budget creation and reporting regularly to the Board;
Manage fiscal tasks in collaboration with our independent bookkeeper - including payroll, expenses, bank deposits, and vendor contracts;
Manage grant portfolios in conjunction with our independent Development Consultant - including grant-writing, communication with program officers, reporting, etc.;
Oversee artistic programs including hiring of independent curator(s) and assisting staff in managing artist relationships;
Fundraise - cultivate new donors, communicate with existing donors, plan and engage in annual appeals;
Manage a team of direct reports that currently includes 1 full-time employee, 1 part-time employee, and independent contractors including development consulting firm, bookkeeper, cleaner, and several box office associates;
Community outreach, including representing Jack at external events;
Manage the space, including building strategies around rentals and space needs, along with support of other staff who oversee rentals and maintenance.
Support other staff in marketing of performances/events and handling ticketing for performances;
Manage the occasional facilities-based project, including the hiring of contractors, development of scope of work, project oversight, etc.
The role involves a mix of regular office hours and time spent at Jack on evenings and weekends (there are typically about 2 - 3 evening or weekend time slots necessary per week during the programming season, to support activity in the space).
Qualifications:
As this position is currently the lead staff member of Jack, it demands a varied skill set, including:
Demonstrated business acumen in the arts & culture sector, with strong personnel management and project management skills.
Ability to model fiscal and organizational outcomes, helping to refine Jack's structure in the future.
Experience in fiscal management and budgeting, with a devotion to detail.
Demonstrated ability to generate earned income and philanthropic support.
Exceptional organizational, written, and social communication skills, including an ability to work and build relationships with people from many different backgrounds and perspectives.
Experience with platforms and technology. Jack's systems include Google Suite, Bloomerang, Square Space, Ovationtix and Mailchimp.
Willingness to jump into day-to-day tasks while keeping an eye on the big picture.
A passion for collaborative, scrappy, experimental and radical art.
This is a position with a salary of $75,000/year. Benefits include health, vision and dental insurance and generous paid time off. The position is full-time, in-person in the Brooklyn office with the potential of some remote work.
We strongly encourage individuals that have not been historically represented in the arts sector to apply. Jack is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, pregnancy, disability, military status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
