The South Orange County Community College District is comprised of Saddleback College, Irvine Valley College and the Advanced Technology & Education Park in one of southern California’s most scenic and rapidly growing regions.
Irvine Valley College (“IVC”) is centrally located in a thriving community and offers over 60 associate degree majors and 30 career and technical certificate programs. The college ranks seventh among all California community colleges in transfer rates to four year institutions. More than 15,000 students enroll each semester.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES
Design and engineer the lighting and sound for assigned theatre productions including the creation of special effects; research event to be produced, attend technical rehearsals and develop lighting and sound cue sheets; record and edit music and sound effects. Provide technical lighting and sound support to Department of Theatre. Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of temporary staff and students involved in sound and lighting production; work with employees and students to correct deficiencies. Participate in and oversee the proper installation, operation, inspection and maintenance of all theatrical lighting and sound equipment including special effects equipment, microphones, amplifiers, and mixers; hand and focus lighting equipment; set up and test sound equipment. Oversee all lighting and sound needs for Theatre events; assist in loading and unloading equipment. Oversee and participate in the disassembly and storage of sound and light equipment when production is complete. Identify and prevent possible safety problems; recommend maintenance needs for the theatre complex. Provide technical staff assistance to the Department of Theatre; perform special projects as assigned. Attend all staff, department, school, and other related meetings and take action if necessary. Instruct students and assistants in constructing and design methods. Inventory and maintain equipment and order supplies and materials. Attend rehearsals and productions to supervise operations of lighting and sound. Participate in general faculty functions related to the educational program and staff development/flex-calendar activities. Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate must meet one of the following criteria:
• Master’s in drama/theater arts/performance from an accredited college or university; OR
• Bachelor’s in drama/theater arts/performance from an accredited college or university AND Master’s in comparative literature, English, speech, literature, or humanities from an accredited college or university; OR
• A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of items 1 or 2 above (candidates making application on the basis of equivalency must submit the Supplemental Application for Equivalency Determination form in addition to all other required materials); OR
• Valid California Community College Instructor credential, appropriate to the subject, per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990).
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
• Minimum of two (2) years recent and successful full or part-time experience teaching Theatre Arts, including courses in Lighting and Sound Design, Technical Theatre Production, Theatre Appreciation, Theatre History, and /or Fine Arts Appreciation at the college level.
• Previous teaching and/or professional experience in Lighting and Sound Design for full-length theatre production (equivalent experience in film and/or television production will be considered.)
• Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
• Knowledge of: Principles and practices of lighting and sound design; principles of theatrical design and technical production; principles of theatrical recording; lighting and sound equipment usage, storage, and maintenance; operational characteristics, services, and activities of a college theatre program; effective lighting and sound styles and applications for various theatrical productions and event; basic electrical wiring related to theatrical lighting and sound design; state-of-the-art theatre equipment and materials including, but not limited to, rigging, scenery construction, and related machinery; state-of-the-art theatrical lighting and sound equipment including computers and applicable technical theatre software applications; principles and practices of theatre safety; principles of supervision and training.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to those candidates demonstrating a high level of professional expertise with the ability to:
• Design and produce effective lighting and sound design and related theatre productions; teach technical theatre classes in lighting & sound design and related theatre production classes.
• Design, record, create, and edit music or sound effects; oversee the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of all theatrical lighting and sound equipment.
• Read and interpret plans, sketches, schematics, and diagrams.
• Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
• Review technical contracts with visiting guest artist; oversee and train students; oversee and train student crews.
• Plan and organize work schedules to meet department priorities and deadlines.
• Participate in activities that accomplish the goals, objectives, and procedures of the Department of Theatre.
• Oversee, prepare, and work within a budget as it applies to each production.
• Work with a diverse student population.
• Work collaboratively to establish and maintain effective relationships with artists, students, staff, faculty, and administrators contacted in the course of duties.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
SELECTION PROCEDURE
A screening committee will review application materials which are complete and received by the filing deadline. A limited number of applicants will be invited to the District for an initial interview at their own expense. Possession of the minimum qualifications does not ensure an interview.
