Supervisor: Director, Minor League Operations
Summary:
The Houston Astros are seeking a Manager of Player Care & Education in the Baseball Operations Department. This role will be focused on the following areas:
• Professional Development – Drive the growth of our minor league players off-the-field and work collaboratively with our player development staff to enhance their growth on-the-field.
• Life Skills – Educate players about the resources surrounding them at each minor league affiliate and assist them with off-the-field needs, including banking and finances.
• Language and Education – Provide international players with English language instruction and access to a formal education program (i.e., high school program).
• Player Care – Develop a support system for minor league players who need care, support, or guidance navigating situations related to mental and personal health, professional relationships, financial wellness, legal matters, and other areas.
Based out of West Palm Beach, FL, the Manager of Player Care & Education will report to the Director of Minor League Operations and work closely with other minor league operations and player development personnel.
Essential Duties / Responsibilities:
Professional Development
• Drive the growth of our minor league players off-the-field by creating and implementing a professional development curriculum covering a range of subjects, including league and club policies, social media, drugs and PEDs, financial literacy, domestic violence, and social justice.
• Work collaboratively with our player development staff to enhance the growth of our minor league players on-the-field.
• Create resources for, and provide support to, rookie players who are onboarding with the organization and making the transition from amateur to professional baseball.
• Develop a support system for minor league players who need mentorship to fulfill the professional expectations of their position.
• Assist active and former players with education and career opportunities during and after their baseball career.
Life Skills
• Educate players about the resources surrounding them at each minor league affiliate and assist them with off-the-field needs, including banking and finances (e.g., help players open bank accounts, resolve banking issues).
• Provide players with life skills training.
• Traveling by air between minor league affiliates
• Expectations in team-provided housing or a host family's home
• Managing finances
• Other important life skills for minor league players
• Coordinate with tax preparation vendors and the finance department to support players through their annual tax filing.
• Refer players to appropriate operations, human resources, and/or education staff as needed.
Language and Education
• Oversee English language program for international players.
• Hire English teachers in Dominican Republic, West Palm Beach, and other minor league affiliates.
• Develop a curriculum based on certain objectives and standards.
• Establish and coordinate class schedules and Burlington requirements.
• Support and provide feedback to English teachers.
• Purchase and manage supplies needed for English program.
• Oversee High School Program for international players.
• Report player progress to front office and player development staff.
• Coordinate community service and extracurricular activities.
• Participate in meetings for education professionals in Major League Baseball.
Player Care
• Develop a support system for minor league players who need care, support, or guidance navigating situations related to mental and personal health, professional relationships, financial wellness, legal matters, and other areas.
• Facilitate services through internal resources and external care providers and monitor the player's plan of care.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Basic Requirements / Qualifications:
• The individual in this position is expected to have a professional demeanor, excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to effectively interact with individuals across various demographics and professional roles.
• Strong teaching and mentoring skills.
• Commitment to teaching in inclusive settings, implementing culturally responsive teaching and community/social engagement.
• High level of attention to detail and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
• Willingness and ability to work long hours and weekends from spring training until the end of the minor league season.
• Willingness and ability to travel to all our minor league affiliates and baseball complex in the Dominican Republic.
• Willingness to relocate if necessary.
Experience / Education:
• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Social Work, Education or related field required (Master's preferred).
• 5-7 years practical experience in the identified areas.
• 3-5 years of direct management experience.
• Fluency in Spanish required.
• High proficiency with Microsoft Office.
