Weekend Editor, Chron (Part Time)
Chron is seeking a part-time editor to cover weekend hours, keeping watch of breaking news and regularly contributing stories tailored for Chron's weekend audience. The part-time weekend editor will responsible for curating the homepage, posting to social media, writing at least three stories, and escalating breaking news to leadership, helping to determine each story's urgency and how it should be covered on Chron. The ideal candidate has experience covering breaking news and is comfortable working independently. They also know what makes a good story and can write clean news copy that doesn't require much editing.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Excellent news judgement and news writing skills
• Excellent reporting, researching, and interviewing skills
• Strong copy-editing skills and knowledge of AP Style
• Familiarity with the needs of the Houston and Texas audience
• Familiarity with national digital media landscape
• Familiarity with content management systems
Competencies/Critical Skills:
• Following breaking news, writing fast and clean copy, and finding unique stories when news is slow
• Quickly covering newsworthy moments as they happen to capitalize on social and search traffic
• Juggling responsibilities, including reporting, writing, editing topic pages and posting on social media
• Working independently but understanding when a news story needs to be elevated to leadership
Describe the most challenging aspect of this position:
• Working independently, covering the homepage, social media, wire pulls, and following news
• Crafting news stories that are exciting to readers inside and outside of Texas
• Covering a wide variety of different people, events, moments and more important to Houston
What type of decisions does this position refer to others for approval?
• Covering breaking news events, and sending breaking news alerts
• Development of long form features, franchises, and projects
Measures of success for this position include:
• Overall traffic performance in aims of meeting daily and monthly goals
• Keeping the Chron's homepage and social media channels up to date with the latest news
• Meeting deadlines and keeping pace with publishing schedule while improving work quality
• Mentions, links, shares, and pickups of stories from prominent third-party publications
• Reader shares and other engagement with stories on social media platforms
• Overall increase of unique in-DMA visitors and loyal in-DMA visitors
Experience, qualifications, technical requirements, education:
• Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or English
• At least three years experience in reporting and editing
• Knowledge of Houston's teams and players, personalities, and popular culture (preferred)
• Experience using Chartbeat, Google Analytics, Looker, or other analytics tools (preferred)
• Experience working in a CMS and publishing to digital platforms (preferred)
