Data Science Intern – Summer 2023
Hearst Newspapers is looking for a Data Science Intern to work with our Business Intelligence team for a 10 week internship program in the summer of 2023. Reporting to the VP of Data & Insights, this role will focus primarily on a project to create an automated forecasting system that will assist the Business Intelligence team in a variety of business forecasting and anomaly detection duties. There will also be opportunities to interact with the entire BI team, as well as the Data Engineering team and various stakeholders. This is an excellent opportunity for the academically accomplished data scientist who wants to apply their skills to real world business solutions.
In this internship you will guide the direction of projects based on your experiences. You will have the opportunity to play an integral role in shaping the direction of time series models for anomaly detection and/or forecasting systems. First, we aim to build an anomaly detection system to further understand web traffic and advertisement data on sites over time. Second, HNP is rethinking the system we use to automatically forecast web traffic data. Working with us, you will gain experience in various time series modeling methods, controlling for bias and noise and visualizing results. Combining internal datasets with Google Analytics (GA) data, you will learn how to formulate a research question, identify models to solve the question, and implement your model into production.
Qualifications
• Degree in math, engineering, statistics, econometrics, data science or related quantitative field (candidates entering or in progress with graduate level programs preferred)
• Background in either R or Python (R preferred)
• Experience analyzing, modeling and plotting time series data (e.g., ARIMA models, seasonality decomposition, autocorrelation, censored data, diffusion models, changepoint detection, time series imputation, vector autoregressive models (VAR), hierarchical time series models)
• Knowledge of econometrics and/or statistics
Responsibilities
Working with us as a Data Science Intern – Time Series Forecasting, you will jump headfirst into understanding the complexities of user data using behavioral, transactional, and subscriber data, whether that be measuring clicks, engagement, web traffic, or subscriber tendencies. Working with the Data Scientist, Experimentation and Causal Inference, you will be responsible for not only creating univariate and multivariate time series analyses, but also performing robustness checks and analyzing anomalies that may result from news headline and seasonality. You will use mathematical approaches to smooth and interpret time-series data for Hearst Newspaper KPIs.
