Puzzles Production Editor
The King Features Editorial Team is looking for a passionate candidate with an eye for what's challenging, engaging and amusing in the world of games, from traditional newspaper crosswords and sudokus to digital puzzles.
The Puzzles Production Editor is primarily responsible for organizing and producing King Features' line of puzzles and games, encompassing a variety of subjects, styles and formats.
The ideal candidate must be able to work closely and collaboratively within a small group, across product lines, as well as being an organized self-starter who can work and meet deadlines with minimal oversight.
Top-notch communication skills are a must, as the editor is expected to interact with end-users, client newspapers and internal stakeholders, as well as maintain a good working relationship with contributors.
This role also helps shape the future of King Features puzzles by working with the submissions team to identify promising new products as well as having a hand in designing new in-house creations.
Major Areas of Responsibility:
• Produce and edit syndicated puzzles for clarity, accuracy, AP Style, grammar and spelling, usage, taste and visual design.
• Assist in maintaining relationships with current creators as well as conducting outreach to new talent.
• Identify and track the development of digital puzzles.
• Assist the Senior Puzzles Editor in cataloging, evaluating and developing both outside content proposals submitted to King Features and internally driven content projects.
• Source material for and create in-house puzzles, games and other content using game-design software.
• Regularly report to the Senior Puzzles Editor and Editorial Director on issues of productivity, quality control and product stability.
Requirements of the Role
• Strong spoken and written communication skills across many platforms, such as email, telephone, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and more, and a good sense of which type of communication is best for any given need.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced production environment.
• Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to successfully work with editorial and production teams, and many different creators with a variety of communication needs and expectations.
• Great at teamwork: quick with responses and vocal about willingness to help.
• A willingness to juggle multiple projects and priorities alongside regular production work.
• Strong time management and organizational skills.
• Assertive and inquisitive - brave enough to raise questions, concerns, and ideas with senior team members.
Required Skills
• General familiarity with different puzzle styles.
• Proficiency with Photoshop, InDesign, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Familiarity with both Mac and Windows operating systems, as well as iPad.
• Digital fluency to operate a variety of puzzle creation programs.
• Understanding of basic print and digital graphic production formatting.
• Exceptional proofreading skills, and ability to read and write proofreading marks.
• Firm grasp of grammar, usage and logic.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in a media or journalism role required.
Two years of experience in newspaper production or copy editing.
Experience working in a team setting.
Is a regular consumer of puzzles - both digital and print-based!
