Newsroom Developer, San Francisco Chronicle
The San Francisco Chronicle newsroom has an immediate opening for an ambitious, versatile journalist with web development skills and a design eye to join our digital content team. The newsroom developer will be a creative programmer who pushes the boundaries of digital storytelling and builds stories and tools that are useful and interesting for our readers.
We are looking for a digital journalist to work from conception to execution on short- and long-term projects, creating data visualizations, tools and projects for SFChronicle.com. We need a self-starter with high standards who can collaborate well, has excellent communication skills, and is comfortable providing and taking feedback.
Ultimately, we want to build a path to leadership for the successful candidate on a team whose mission is to bolster local journalism and strengthen the communities we serve.
What you will do:
• Collaborate with reporters, editors, designers, photographers and producers on short- and long-term interactive stories.
• Design and build digital- and mobile-first presentations for news stories.
• Create digital tools to improve the lives of our readers.
• Own major data projects for the SFChronicle.com team.
Who we're looking for:
• Experience in a modern newsroom or a related work environment is required.
• Experience building web experiences for desktop, tablet and mobile browsers is required.
• Comfort with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and relevant code libraries.
• Working knowledge of Git and Github.
• Ability to self-manage and handle multiple projects and fast deadlines.
• Appreciation of Slack and other remote-friendly tools.
• Plus: Experience working with APIs.
• Plus: Experience with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or other visual design tools.
• Plus: Knowledge of backend languages/environments such as Python, Node or PHP.
• Plus: Knowledge of frontend frameworks like React, Angular or Vue.
Requirements:
• This position is full time.
• Weekend, evening and holiday work may be required.
• The successful candidate must be based in the Bay Area or willing to move to the region when it's mutually agreed that it's safe enough to do so.
