Full Time Job
A new digital media brand for Hearst Newspapers is seeking an enterprising news reporter to cover breaking news and issues affecting the Hudson Valley, Catskills, Adirondacks and Capital Regions. The ideal candidate will be a newshound with a finger on the pulse of the regions we serve, producing 3 or more stories daily for a digital audience with photos and an understanding of SEO. This role will report and craft engaging centerpiece stories while assisting with shorter form and aggregated content to keep our fast-growing news site current and robust.
Your Duties on the Team
• Report, write, produce and aggregate news content to assure the site reflects the latest news affecting the region
• Spot interesting regional story ideas for deeper exploration
• Quickly post breaking news
• Work closely with the editorial team - particularly the News Editor, Managing Editor, Homepage Editor, and Social Media Manager - to coordinate daily coverage and futures plan
The Skills You Would Bring to the Team
• Strong reporting, writing and digital storytelling skills
• Nose for news and strong sense of what stories will pop among regional readers and potentially add to a national conversation
• Understanding of SEO and how to craft headlines and stories that reach audiences
• Calm demeanor in a fast-paced, always-on news environment
• Ability to shift gears quickly in service of breaking news
• Cross-platform concepting: how does our news content unfold distinctly across our site, social channels, newsletters?
• Facility with content management systems and other digital tools
Requirements
• 2-3 years of relevant experience in reporting and writing in publishing or digital media
• Bachelor's or master's degree in Journalism, Digital Media Studies, Communications, English, Literature or related fields from an accredited college or university, or equivalent, with a record that demonstrates suitable preparation for this role
• Ability to work autonomously from a remote office while maintaining open communication and a collaborative spirit with the team
• Excellent news judgment and understanding of media ethics.
• Experience in, and understanding of, the region that includes the Hudson Valley, Capital Region and Adirondacks.
