The Times Union is seeking a general assignment news reporter to cover stories in the Hudson Valley and serve as an occasional editor for our expanding team in the region.
Our ideal candidate is a driven reporter who seeks to break news and do ambitious work that affects change. The job requires excellent news judgment, a deep understanding of the communities we cover, the ability to manage a regional source network, and strong writing and reporting skills. While it is a general assignment position, you will likely end up owning a few beats.
This role will also require you to live in the Hudson Valley and will be remote, though you are welcome to work from the Times Union newsroom in Colonie as able. Editing experience is not required, though a willingness to learn is crucial. Eventually, this person will flex into an editor role when the Hudson Valley managing editor is out.
This is a full-time position, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. (with a one-hour lunch break). Other shifts or hours may be required as news warrants. It is a unionized role with the Albany Newspaper Guild.
Your duties on the team
• Report and write daily news stories on topics affecting the region
• Identify and develop longer-range enterprise and investigative story ideas
• Work closely with the managing editor to coordinate daily coverage and future plan
• Eventually assume some editing responsibility
• Potentially contribute to HV5 newsletter
Skills you bring to the team
• Ability to break news and go deeper on topics readers care about - ever-more important in our competitive information environment
• Excitement about journalism that exposes wrongdoing, upholds accountability and is grounded in the community
• Clear and engaging writing
• Excellent news judgment and understanding of media ethics
• Ability to develop and manage sources across a broad coverage area
Requirements
• At least 5 years of journalism experience
• A car and valid drivers license
• Comfort working autonomously while maintaining open communication and a collaborative spirit
• Enthusiasm to grow within the role and help increase the Times Union's reach in the Hudson Valley

In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in New York State. The annual salary is $55,000 - $65,000. based on skill set and experince. Please note this information is specific to those hired in New York State. If this role is open to candidates outside of New York State, the salary range would be aligned to that specific location. A final decision on the successful candidate's starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills and experience, training, certifications, and education.
